Dome Fuse Wiring

Hi everybody,

I have '98 Avensis GLS which has started to continually blow the dome fuse.

As a result the central locking has also stopped working. I know the fuse is linked to the central locking in some way as it works if i put a slightly bigger fuse in (10 instead of 7.5).

The strange thing is that the interior lights, clock and trip all work off the dome fuse but i can't understand why the central locking/alarm would also work off the same circuit.

Does anybody know if this is right ? Is it safe to run a slightly bigger fuse in this case?

Exactly the same thing kept happening to mine. In the end I managed to stop the fuse blowing by putting in a new interior light bulb - perhaps the old one was starting to break up inside even though it still worked.

Similar thing happened to me a few weeks ago :

- The ceiling courtesy light 'went'.

- I changed the bulb and the fuse blew immediately.

- I replaced the fuse, noticing that the prev. owner must have had a similar problem, as the spare 7.5A fuse was missing, and the blown fuse that was meant to be a 7.5A was in fact a 10A. (Which is what I have in right now till I get round to Halfords)

Since then I have had no more problems, but I am just waiting now ...

The really odd thing was that the bulb I took out appeared to be fine.

Are avensis (02) known for electrical oddities ?

I think half the MKI Avensis' have troubles, the other half don't, but the ones that do all seem to suffer the same ones.

Hello Guys,

I am new to this club but I really find your exchanges of ideas very useful. I have a similar problem with my Avensis 1.8 estate(99). The central locking on the car has gone completely. I have to physically lock the car from the inside before I use the key to lock the driver side. The alarm works though. the electrician noticed that the green fuse kept blowing when replaced it. The inside light works ok except the inside light at the back. I am wondering if any one can help me sort this out. Thanks guys

Was changing my interior light bulb today and I lost my light, stereo & satnav and my central locking.

I read this thread and located the 7.5 amp fuse in the engine compartment. This was blown, I replaced it with a 10 amp as i have no spare and i got the central locking back but no stereo or interior light.

As it happens my 2000 avensis d4d is going to the mechanic tomorrow to have 5th gear repaired... the syncro ( i'm blabbing here) is gone on it so it keeps popping out of 5th..

anyway i'll get the mechanic to check the fuses as well and i'll update this thread

The only thing i'll point out peeps is that fuses are there for a reason, and rated to suit the load, cabling and other factors.

If you start raising the fuse rating, other things are gonna give way instead of the fuse doing so. This applies to all fuses both in the car and home. If the fuse is blowing, sommat's wrong.

But yeah, those interior lamps have caused some problems in their time!

could anybody tell me where this dome fuse is for c/locking interior lights

In the under bonnet fuse box. The interior light is part of the security system, if the bulb is faulty, the locking doesn't work. I think that is a serious design fault.

Yes but at the end of the day, everything is protected by one fuse or another. You can still lock the doors manually. You cannot overcome every plausible problem.

replaced my blown dome fuse with the proper rated fuse 7.5 amp... and central locking, interior light & stereo back to normalish.... noticing a recurring problem though... I have had 3 yes 3 interior lights which when inserted are proper bright and illuminate the car and after a few days become dull ... same thing everytime

Also ..

My alarm is going off radomly when i'm out of the car and its locked and also when i'm sat in the car. I would have only just switched off the ignition and off it gos.. I found myself sitting in the car repeatedly pressing the key fob to unlock which momentarily stops the alarm .. The alarm only turns off when it feels like it..

I have had this avensis 5 wks now and i am discovering niggly problems all the time...

Any ideas on the alarm situation folks... worried about 3am wake ups!!

Thanks
