Smartkey Battery Life?

I'm so used to having the keyfob in my pocket to enter the car - all well and good but what happens if the Battery fails? I can get in with the attached key but it won't start will it?. Two years old in September should I have the batteries changed? Don't think they do it in the standard service.

I go overboard and change ours every year at MOT time - fairly cheap, or you could keep spare batteries inside the car.
