Rear View Camera Installation On Gen 2

I never thought I’d need it, I still don’t but I want it. haha. In hindsight, I should have got one that has this feature already.

I have been looking on eBay and there are some decent rear view cameras on sale, I wonder if it’s plug and play and how easy it is to install? Do I need adaptors for the screen and perhaps new software? I have tried searching for this here and at Priuschat but failed.

Any advice/help is appreciated.

Where do you want the backup camera image to display?

There are a couple of threads over on Prius Chat.

If you fit an aftermarket head unit with backup camera input, or a rear view mirror with backup camera screen, you can just connect a rear view camera to the unit. You will probably have to run your own video cable from front to back (or go wireless) and find a suitable 'reverse' signal to trigger it (reverse tail light is good).

Looking at the Prius Chat threads, it seems like they are hooking the camera up to the MFD via a coastal adapter.

Ah I should have made clear that I have a T spirit with a Sat Nav enabled MDF, however as it is a 06 reg, it doesn’t come with park assist and rear view camera. I was wondering if I can buy an aftermarket one off say eBay and plug and play? Or will I need adaptors/wires/software upgrades etc? I Ideally want the whole setup to be similar to the factory install, just not paying the £XXX for a tiny plastic camera from Mr T.

And, Wireless? That sounds convenient! Do you have any links to these cameras?

Thanks for your help

A third party camera - easy and cheap

A "real" Toyota camera - not so easy and not cheap

Full "park assist" - probably impossible. Replace car.

is my guess. Pick one!

Sounds like you need to look into the adaptor that is mentioned in the Prius Chat threads.

Might be worth you asking over on Prius Chat in the gen2 section?

I fitted a cheap wireless chinese camera from eBay to my gen3.

The main problem was finding a source for the reverse signal at the dashboard to switch the head unit to backup camera mode. The usual trick of tapping into the reversing bulb lead wasn't an option.

Some wireless cameras:

Installation (for gen3 - might be able to adapt for a gen2?)

You sir are a great help, thanks very much.

Bibsy, I am only after one of them cheap and cheerful cameras as I have no desire to let the car park itself, I can do that myself and possibly a lot quicker too lol.
