Not going to happen. The cars affected are well outside the new car warranty.

As Toyota Owners Club is independent of Toyota, and Toyota don't visit these forums, the message won't be seen by Toyota.

Problem is that every now and again (in the last couple of weeks it happens nearly everyday), when I slow down and the gear box goes into 1st gear (for example, at trafic lights) it goes into Neutral and the fault lamp for gearbox lights on the dashboard. It happen when in both Semi-auto mode and Manual mode...

There's no way you can get it back in gear unless you switch off the engine, wait for 30 to 60 seconds and switch on again.the clutch slippin in changes to all gears

I've read several forum threads on this issue (some old ones), but couldn't find an exact answer for what is causing the gearbox to fail and what would be the proper fix.

Have anyone else came across this issue and happen to know more?

Hi everyone,

I bought an used Yaris (2006, 1.3 Petrol, MMT) back in July 2020 with about 125K km on the clock. Engine wise it’s been bulletproof as always with Toyota’s (ofc i’ve done all perodicial services). Can’t say the same about the gearbox tho, in 2.5 yrs of ownership i’ve reprogrammed the car myself quite a few times using just some metallic wires by connecting nr 4 with 4 (up), and it seemed to be okay. After that i had the first hit, in end of January 2022 had to change the clutch itself it was on it’s way out (fun fact : it wasn’t even his clutch, just some random clutch from a manual car 🤦‍♂️) and car was jerky even on highway let alone on city and traffic jams. In December 2022 i had the same problems you guys had, where the car would shift itself to N when it was on E1 or E2 (when i stopped to roundabouts, traffic jams or stuff like that). I didn’t know what to do so i just openend Actuator and cleaned it, reprogrammed it myself i gave it some shoots and it was okay. After excatly 1 month & 5 days (2 days ago) the worst thing came 😅 Clutch Actuator went out. I had to put a new one and every other stuff which came with it, costed me about 500€. Hope it will be okay for some time now as it only has 156.000 km and car was always well kept…

Still pleading that has anyone found an exact solution to Toyota Yaris VVTI 2003 semiautomatic car slipping to flashing neutral on dashboard at roundabouts and traffic stops? You mostly have to switch off engine for up to 2 minutes and turn it on just for it to continue on drive but problem keeps recurring. Please help out a brother with exact solution of how you fixed yours years back.

Hi Isaac, This problem with the MMT gear box has been highlighted a few times over the years.From what I have read changing the actuator seems to have resolved this .

This is an extract from the possible cause.

I have known a couple,of problems with these systems - and the usual two main faults are with the clutch actuator mechanism ( electronic) and with the main TCM itself... thats the Transmission control unit / ecu.

Essentially the rest of the transmission and its operative parts are in the main , reliable - but problems persist in the above areas.

The trouble is , there is not a lot that can be done outside the dealer network on these as yet. This is because of the diagnostic equipment needed / dedicated software to connect and work with, the electronics that work with and control, the transmission...

You could perhaps have a ring around local Auto Transmission specialists in your locale and ask to see if any of them has the relevant equipment to deal with these... If so, that would be a good move as such people work on these type of units daily...
If not - you are back to the dealers - as I suspect will actually be the case...

 You can obviously speak to Toyota technical and ask them as I am sure they are aware of the cause of this issue and should be able to offer a solution.🙂

There are known solutions, the problem is people generally don't want to pay for them.

The general gist is, if it has trouble going into gear, it's usually because the clutch and actuator need replacing and recalibrating. The dealer can do all this but it's expensive. Independent specialists can do it cheaper, and may also be able to repair the system without replacing as much stuff, but they are harder to find.
