Hi all

My celica has recently started making a rattling noise which sounds like its coming from the top of the engine, It seems to only happen when coasting with some slight revs such as after changing gear and lifting the clutch . sorry if this is a poor description I dont know much about engines at all. Had the oil and air filter changed around 7 months ago, oil level seems fine and oil looks normal, coolant level is low ( I dont know if this is related at all but i guess worth mentioning) , I dont do many miles in it at all, the noise started about a month ago. Car has done 54000 miles.

Although you say the oil level is fine, how has the oil level been over the last 12 months?

Exactly same symptoms here - on 58K miles.

Started ~2 months ago. Originally intermittant - and only at warm idle. Now constant - only noticeable when warm, and only up to about 1500 rpm.

Sounds like timing chain rattle from top right hand side (driver's side of engine block) right?

Oil changed 6 months ago. Coolant and oil levels ok. Both fluids in good condition............

Similar to your situation Rikter?

Rattle diagnosed here as slack in timing chain on low-tension side............
