hi guys, just wondering if anyone could help me with a problem i'm having with my Toyota Yaris, been getting a grinding/ whaling noise recently and im unsure what it is, i thought possibly it could be my brake discs as they havent been done yet but it's making the noise while ticking over, also someone mentioned it could be the timing belt, its been doing it a few months but only used to do it when the weather was wet and really cold, once the engine heated up it stopped, but it's doing it all the time now, anything under 30mph it seems to be doing it, anything over that it seems fine again.

just wondering if it sounded fimiliar to anyone or if anyone had any ideas?

cheers.

If it's the noise I think you mean (Reminiscent of rapid fingernails-on-chalkboard or excited guinea pig squeakings), it's most likely the ancillaries belt needs tightening. Seems to be quite a common thing (My Mk1 D4D also has this fault, but like you used to I only experience it in the winter!)

It won't be the timing 'belt' as the Yaris doesn't have one (Has a timing chain; Should never need to be replaced if the car gets regular oil changes!)

Does seem moisture related; I had started it up one morning after it'd been ****** down with rain the night before and it scared the crap out of me with the loud scraping/shrieking sound

I just revved it up a bit (It would disappear above, say, 1100rpm?) and went on my way and it had stopped by the time I'd gotten to my first corner. I probably should get that thing tightened too at the next service...
