(Celica 1991 3SGE Conv automatic)

Hi freind, thanks for the advice last time Ive got the engine together & running order, however now it seems to surge up & down at idle like theres no tomorrow

There also seems to be loud hiss which I cannot pinpoint around the plenum area.

Ive checked (& doublechecked) all the pipes & hoses which all seem to be ok/secure.Ive took the plenum & inlet manifold off & resealed gaskets using hylomars but still the surging problem is still there! :ffs:

Could it be the headgasket?

B) Hi LEEKY!,

Nice of you to reply so soon,I thought you'd be out motorin' on this bank holiday!

I previously had the problem where the engine cranked over no problem but would not fire up;-

The car has been stood since last summer. It fires up no problem but the surging is terrible!

Hi cat,

Nah i've been sick all weekend so have missed all the cruising potential <_<

Anyway yeah back to the question at hand.

Well its quite possibly a headgasket problem, especially with the noise you mentioned. Are you burning any oil or have you got any gunk built up under the radiator cap?

Other than a headgasket the only thing i can think of is that possibly your ECU may be a little fussy. You have aother celica dont you? Have you tried switching ECU's? Shouldnt make any diffrence that one is a manual and one is an auto.

may be that one cylinder isnt completely air tight and is loosing some pressure which would explain the noise and the surging - which would explain why you cant pinpoint the noise because its very much a central thing. But this is most likely again going to be your headgasket.

If you have the time i'd change the gasket, even if its not that at least you know its got a new one. By the way is your existing head gasket torqued up enough?

Im not sure the torque level needed on your engine but fensport should be able to tell you

Apart from that im a bit answered out  think im gonna go have a sleep
