I,m thinking of buying a second hand 2005 avensis 1.8 Aura SAL VS Auto. Any thoughts on whether these are good cars ??? Any things I should watch out for. What kind of mpg would I get. Any advice graciously welcomed.

I have a 2005 1.8vvti avensis and get towards 40mpg if driven like a granny, more towards mid 30's if not. I'm not sure if the one you mention is the same car or not.

The 1.8 vvti engine had an oil burning problem but was cured around mid 2005. Perhaps best to avoid the ones built before the modification. There's a thread on here somewhere with pre and post engine numbers.

Great car to drive if you like pipe and slippers driving, not the most sporited but it can lift its heels if you want it to.
