Seems A Bit Hot

i just recently bought a celica gt4 st185. been running it now for about a month and it just seems to me that the engine gets awfully hot. the temperature gauge doesnt indiacte that high a temerature but im getting the heat "haze" from above bonnet and plus from underneath the car flowing up past the doors. now to me this doesnt seem right.

another thing is that i seem to be getting a bit of carbon build up on my exhaust. now the oil is due for a change so i think it could be that. but could it be anything wrong with the turbo? :help:

Providing the thermostat is working and the cooling fans run when they are told to - the GT4's do produce a lot of heat from under the bonnet( Turbo is mounted quite high up ).

Just let it warm up and with the bonnet open - make sure the top and bottom rad hoses are hot as well as the 2 heater hoses on the bulkhead( top and bottom hoses hot - stat opened- coolant circulation)

Ensure that the cooling fan kicks in and the temp. gauge is reading just above the halfway mark.

You will know if the turbo vane seals go - excessive oil consumption, blue smoke out the back and loss of performance.

I used to change my engine oil every 3000 miles and filter change at 6000 - you will amazed at how quickly the engine oil deterioates in a Turbo engine and for what 5 liters of engine oil costs, its peace of mind.

Its quite normal to get the heat haze coming from the bonnet, my old ST185 did this through the bonnet scoop. My ST205 you can see the heat billowing out of the vent - its neat to see.

As Mick said as long as the fan is coming on and off correctly and the gauge isn't going high then your OK.

The Carbon buildup on your exhaust is fairly common aswell. Its not a particular problem - it is the results of overfueling, which nearly all GT-Fours suffer from as standard.

I change oil and filter every 3000 miles I use Mobil 1 15W/50 Oil and a genuine Toyota filter. (Just reminded me its oil change tomorrow - I had best go get some :) )

Yeah every one seems to share the same opinion that the GT-Four pumps out the heat. If you find that it seems a little gutless taking off after sitting for a few minutes at lights you could do what ive done. a davies craig 10" electric fan fits very snuggly in the scoop of the 185's with minor sanding of the housing of the fan motor, and ive found that this is a dramatic improvement. the diff in temp of the intercooleer is really significant. ive also wired an override to the radiator fan not so much for the cooling of the radiator but to keep air moving through the engine bay.
