New Engine Under Warranty But Problem Selecting 2Nd Gear

Hi

Got my car back 2 days ago with a new engine replaced under the extended warranty for head gasket problems. Result.

However, when the engine is cold I really struggle to select 2nd gear which wasn't the case before I got the new engine. I've read other post relating to this and will be asking the dealer about changing the gearbox oil when I return to them for the 500 mile re-inspection.

My question is - can this related to the new engine in any way or just coincidence?

Thanks

Dave

If you aren't happy you should contact them and let them know. If the gear selection was fine before and isn't now it seems to me that the issue can only have arisen during the engine change. Don't be worried about contacting the dealer - they want you to be happy with the service they gave you because then you recommend them to others. Good for business see?

when the engine is changed the gear cables are undone, so i would ring the dealer up and let them know. they should then sort it out for you. sometimes these things do happen and they need fine adjustments

Just phoned the dealer and they said that it's nothing to worry about as it was new gearbox oil they put in during the engine replacement and as it's thicker this can happen for a while then it'll be fine.

The dealer has been fantastic so far but can't help thinking they are fobbing me off with this explanation.

Any thoughts?

At least you have made them aware of the situation, keep a note of who and when you have spoken to them, give the car a couple of long runs and if there is no change within a week or two call them again and tell them you are not happy and want them to rectify the problem. Don't be abusive but be firm, it seems you have a good relationship with them so far and it's best kept that way. Good luck.

New gear box oil shouldn't cause that much difference! Have they put the correct grade in? As my Avensis has to have a straight 75w grade of trans oil and not something like a 75w/90... Quite a lot of dealers have recommended to me the wrong oil for the box!!!

Thanks Taff. Armed with that info I've just phoned the dealer again - spoke to the master technician who said they put 75w/80 oil in as recommended by Toyota. Again he insisted the problem is due to thickness of the oil and it will be fine in due course.

If I'm honest I didn't feel entirely comfortable telling a toyota master technician that he should've used straight 75 oil instead so I suggested if it doesn't improve maybe we could use a different oil and that I knew of other avensis owners who use straight 75.

Maybe I'm not assertive enough!

Have you checked the owners handbook to see what that recommends? Also check on the Opie Oils web site as they are rite on the money when it comes to what oils. I used a straight 75w full synth double ester oil called Silkolen Pro SRG. I still think that the dealer could be wrong here as thats what I was told by a few dealers when I asked about the grade of oil.

It can't be due to the thickness of the oil as a 75w/80 oil is the same weight as a 75w oil when cold! It only gets to an 80w weight when the oil gets hot...

The handbook says SAE 75W. Opie Oils website offers SAE 75W and 75W-80 as suitable products. So i'll go with Mistermena and the handbook. Good work. Thanks again.

Um, I'm curious. What does the master technician say is going to happen to this oil in time? Its meant to last so shouldn't really be changing much. Something doesn't smell too good here. It may be that there's a bit of bull---t in the box.........

Go with the straight 75w grade of oil. I've not had any problem with my gearbox with said weight! nice gear change even when icy cold into 2nd gear...

  • 2 weeks later...

Quick update - took the car back to the dealer for the 500 mile inspection and mentioned the gearbox issue. They put straight 75 oil in and that's it sorted. Thanks again.

Listen to Mistermena and not the master tech as Oil does not need time to "Bed-In"
