Hi all after cleaning my egr valve on my toyota avensis d4d 2008 everything seemed fine managed to get the warning lights off by disconnecting the negative cable on Battery for a while but have noticed and certain times i get a puff of black smoke from exhaust is this normal for a while i have just had the car serviced and was hoping this will become less over the week any advice will be welcomed many thanks jon

Hello Jon,

Yes it's normal for most diesels to put a bit of black smoke out under accelleration, most noticable when it's dark and you see it in the following cars headlights. The secret with the Avensis is to give it a good burst of speed now and again at 3-4k revs for a couple of minutes when it's safe to do so, this should keep the EGR etc free from the crap that builds up.

Thanks for that also i have had an idling and my mechanic disconnected the main air flow sensor after i bit of research i found how to clean the sensor with some carb spray checked the egr valve again incase i missed anything and took for spin and its excellent no idling no smoke an flying so i'm a happy bunny at the mo
