Turbo Issues?

Hi Guys,

Set off on holiday last week in the RAV, got 10 miles away when the oil light came on - hadn't checked it for a while (serviced in February), so thought it could be low (have had to top it up between services before) so changed satnav to take me somewhere to get oil. Few miles down the road, started getting quite a loud tinny rattling noise from something, so stopped straight away. Checked the oil - it was low, but at minimum, so not critical. Checked round everything (not really knowing what i'm looking at) and all seemed to be ok. Didn't fancy going off on holiday in it so started driving back - seemed ok for a couple of miles - oil light off - then it came on again and started making the noise again, so stopped and called out recovery. The guy looked at it and couldn't find anything wrong, but I got it lifted to my local garage anyway.

The garage said they couldn't find anything wrong - took it for a drive but no noises and no oil light - did say there was maybe a bit of a turbo whine though (surprised they didn't investigate this further). I got back from holiday today and took it for a little drive after collecting it, and the original noise didn't happen, but I can now hear what i guess could be the turbo whine - not really loud, but definitely something going on. As I got closer to home, the oil light came on again. At home, checked oil level - looked ok. While running on drive, no oil light, but when i revved it the oil light came on, then went off again.

So obvious question really - any idea what might be going on? Turbo on way out? (seemed ok driving - turbo must have been operating, but i never drove it particularly hard as worried something might let go altogether). Anything I can check?

Gonna have to have it back to the garage for them to investigate further.

Had the DMF go, AirCon compressor go (still gone - not fixed), and EGR problems, and now maybe turbo - 83000 miles!? Wish i'd never bought the thing to be honest (it is good when it snows though!)

Cheers

Wayne

Helllo Wayne,

not straight forward this fault but firstly I would change the oil and filter and make sure it's the correct oil for your engine, did they actually change the filter last service?? If the fault is still there then have someone connect an oil pressure guage in place of the oil pressure switch as this is the only real way to test the oil pressue. If the pressure is low it could be one of many things like worn oil pump or crankshaft bearings but hopefully this won't be the case.

The oil and filter change is your first and cheapest option for now.

Regards Pete.
