A fan writes . . .

As a fierce, crusading journalist who has at least two or three readers every day -- granted, that's the libel lawyers and the sub-editors -- I am well used to being bombarded with fan mail on a daily basis.

It's quite bothersome having to take at least 20 seconds out of my hectic schedule to read people expressing their adoration, but I'm too modest to bang on about it all the time.

But every now and then a missive of such tender gratitude comes in that is impossible to ignore.

Such as this one: "I'd like to start this email by saying I have little respect for you as a journalist and far less as a person. I'd usually ignore anything you have to say about anything, but I decided to point out how wrong you are in one of your 'articles' today. GAA fans are better than soccer fans . . . Also, you are overweight."

Stop! Please!

Honestly, I'll be getting a big head having to deal with praise like that.
