Code P0770 Diagnosed From Engine Warning Light

Hi,

I am new to this forum and would appreciate any advice anyone can give. I have a 2001 Toyota Avensis, given to me last year by my Dad. In 2009 the car had several problems which led to it seizing up on him - when diagnosed it showed P0500, P0750, P0770 (shift solenoid 'E' mafunction') which all-in-all led to the car having a new gear box, transmission drained and refilled costing £2,000.

3 and a half years later, whilst running perfectly, the car has begun to show the engine light and when diagnosed it's come up with code P0770 (shift solenoid 'E' malfunction), which the dealership (different one to before) have said means it needs a new Engine / Transmission ECU.

The dealership are very poor at explaining and a friend of mine who is an electrical mechanic says he wants to see the full report because ECU's don't hardly ever go in Toyota's - but the dealership say there is no full report just the code and the recommendation from following the flow chart.

Can anyone explain further? If indeed it does need a new ECU, can I buy a part online and get anyone to fit it? Does it need to be calibrated using specialist equipment?

Thanks

Thank you for your comments. I just got similar advice from another automechanic friend of friend, who said check the Battery (sometimes if it drops intermittently below 12 he said it can malfunction the solenoid) and flush the transmission - which I think is what you're saying too plus cleaning the filter? I will PM you - thanks

Hi Luis.

Just a stab in the dark here.

On the RAVs around this year some of the autos started to experience problems with the tranmission,i.e. harsh gear changes which if not sorted would wreck the box.

The answer was to recon the ecu which can be done by private companies.

The cost is in the region of 200 quid and usually have a lifetime guantee

This may not help but would be worth looking at
