B9004/rear View Camera

I have already set up my RAV with a camera from eBay and it works well, but I now want to put a licence plate camera in to see in the region of the towbar. The present one is in the door and the sill is in the way.

I have bought a new camera and to test, unpluged the existing and pluged the new into the same sockets. With this I get the warning but the screen is just a mass of shattered background as if it is trying but not succeeding. The present camera still works fine.

Is there something i need to do or is the new camera the wrong output?

As usual, thanks in advance to those who are always willing to help.

Brian

the original camera for RAV4 is powered by about 6VDC.

All ebay's cameras are powered by 12VDC.

maybe that's the problem?

Hi At the moment I have a fully working camera which came from eBay. I have noticed that this is PAL and the new one is not. I have taken the plunge and ordered a second new camera which can operate on PAL. The working camera is

our resident sparky.. erm.. i mean electonric guru (sorry Andy!) will tell you NTSC is better so i would doubt that's the issue.

At the moment I have a fully working camera which appears to be PAL. This is eBay 12V. When I unplug the two leads and plug the new camera into the circuit I just get the shattered screen and the warning. It is using the existing wiring but it only lists NTSC as the output. So I have blown my pocket money on another camera which also has a PAL facility (says PAL on demand?) and see if that cures it. It will be several days before it arrives and I can try it.

Regards and thanks Brian

our resident sparky.. erm.. i mean electonric guru (sorry Andy!) will tell you NTSC is better so i would doubt that's the issue.

Let me clarify this a little. All those years ago when I first played with this, the unit displayed from both a PAL and an NTSC video input signal. That's not surprising because the digitising composite video chips usually handle both formats. It was just in my opinion, the NTSC source appeared to give a slightly better picture.

In general, I would never accept that NTSC is the better system. PAL was not nearly as susceptable in transmission to the colour (should that be color?) variations of NTSC (Never Twice Same Color).

I just get the shattered screen and the warning.

Sorry Brian, that description doesn't help me that much I'm affraid. If you could post a picture that would help (although, that may not fully show what you mean, due to picture refresh/sync etc).

I expect you mean, the picture looks like it has lost its synchronisation? What might have been referred to in the past as loosing veritcal or horizontal hold on old analogue systems.

If I'm right in guessing what you are seeing, it sounds to be like the video is not sync'ed up properly. Probably the unit is not seeing the sync pulse part of the signal cleanly, which is usually characteristic of poor or incorrect grounding. It's an effect I got when experimenting with all this over 5 years ago, until I realised what I though was ground was an enable signal (which needed to be grounded) and not the video ground.

Thanks Brian, so the number plate light cam doesn't work? That's a shame as would prefer that as its neater?

My new car has a Rear View Camera....my previous (sold within hours....) SR180 that I traded in had been fitted with reversey beep-beeps by Anchorman. I know we are financially comparing apples with horses, but give me the beep-beeps any day.....the camera is just for the gadget conscious, which is usually me. I find myself now with 3 things to look at (2 mirrors and a telly.)

The previous 2 mirrors and two ears was infinitely preferational.

Kev, don't you have bleeps bleeps as well as two mirrors and a telly? Sure they are not turned off :-)

Gus

Edit: maybe not on the SR looking at your piccies.

Non standard unfortunefully, Gus....really thinking about retro fit.....it's not that I don't trust the camera / telly....I just feel whilst concentrating on that, I am not properly attending to periphery. Purely a personal thing.

The Outlander I had in that Canada had same set up as your new RAV Kev. I really missed the beep beeps, especially as I invariably reverse park. Totally agree about using eyes AND ears.

Kev, I told you you'd need the RBs :).

I generally don't pay that much attention to my camera either. I just scan the screen as I switch between the two mirrors.

I have the same observation as Gus, it's not much help when wet. It needs some form of wiping system, but that would probably make it too big and/or too expensive. It's always going to get crud thrown up at it on a vehicle like the RAV with a straight(ish) back.

I do like the systems on things like the Nissan Cashcow, with a camera front, rear and pointing down from each wing mirror. The images are combined and it gives the effect of a sort of bird's eye view from above the vehicle. (They superimose an overhead picture of the car in the middle of the screen and combine the camera images around it). You can see how you've positioned the vehicle between the white lines withing a parking space for instance - not that I usually find that a problem, but it's a nice confirmation aid.

Would make an interesting image processing project with a few more cameras for the RAV and feeding into the camera input on the HU.

Or just adapt the Prius self parking system perhaps :).
