My Mum Got Caught For Speeding

Hi, we got a letter today saying my mum got caught for speeding and was caught by the video cameras. Apparantly she was doing 75 on a 60 mph road, the letter said it was a notice for intended prosecution....

I just wanted advice in this and is there anything we can do?

thanks!

Was she speeding?

If not, then I'm sure someone else can give some advice on what to do next.

If she was speeding, then you should just accept you've been caught and pay the fine. Trust me, there are more important things in life than a speeding fine. And as the saying goes, "if you can't do the time, don't do the crime". In this case the "time" is really 3 points and a "fine". The crime is breaking the speed limit!

I don't want to sound like I'm preaching, but seeing as I make a concious effort to stick to the speed limit, it really offends me when people moan about being caught breaking the law, for which they have no respect.

if ti's on camera there's not a lot you can really do apart from send the info back and if they can provide the photo accept the responsibility and bite the bullet, I recently got one aswell :(

Ask 4 a photo! Its nice 4 a free photo!

Anyway i would just pay the fine and get on with it because i can't say i don't speed!

And dazwan are u sayin u don't speed? Come on speak sense!

Cheers

The point I was making wasn't whether or not I disagree with speeding. I don't care if other people speed thats up to them, just don't complain about it if you get caught.

In answer your question though, I make a CONCIOUS EFFORT not to speed, so yes to all intents and purposes I don't speed, obviously I go over the limit occasionally (everyone does), but not usually on purpose. There is actually a minority that do stick to the limit and I'm proud to be in that minority. If I did get caught I'd accept it like an adult and not like a child caught stealing.

I did question whether Firebreather's Mum was actually speeding. If she was unaware of her speed, or the limit, then she has my sympathies. It's never nice to be fined for something when you didn't mean to do it.

Dazwans attitude is pretty mature and shouldnt be knocked for daring to say what lots of people dont post on here!

I rarely take my car out without letting it get up to 100 at some point during a journey. I stick to 30s in built up areas but I'm a petrolhead at heart. I make no apologies for this fact.

If I was to get caught speeding then what else could I do but to accept that I was breaking the law. I am an adult, and I have no problem with taking responsibility for my actions and the consequences thereof.

Whether or not I think the laws with regards to vehicle speed are actually justifiable is a whole different ball game, but it isn't an issue I'd take up with a copper or member of admin staff who is just doing his/her job.

In short - There's not much you can do if you got nabbed and are guilty as charged.

There is something you can do if you are prepared to fight but to be honest if it is your mum's first offence take the 3 point's and the £60 fine. Have a look at HERE and read through the FAQ's and as far as i know this loophole still hasn't been closed but will most probably end up costly in the long run.

Personally i have no problems with speed, sorry safety camera's located in places where they will improve road safety but as we all know their are some located in area's where they are just their to make extra revenue, so if any of you are travelling in a area not known to you then it might help you to have a look HERE and check the relevent area's police camera site so you know where the safety camera's are and thus be prepared for an oncoming blackspot that you wasn't going to be aware of.

Don't forget to check the location's of the mobile safety camera van's as well and it is some of these that i have a very big problem with. Humberside a very clearly marked safety camera van parked up on a long 60mph straight (4miles) at 6am on a sunday morning, fair enough clearly marked, sign's posted and thankfully i was aware of it's location thank's to the above site. But come on i never saw anything else on the road and it was in a rural location so who was that keeping safe at that time of a morning?

Cumbria's van is dark blue with no marking's on the back with orange lights on top which was turned off when i saw it, just looked like a work's van for a building company, grrrrr. Now that has nothing to do with safety at all and it is them i object to :cacker:

Before you all ask, i've never had any point's on my license

thanks for the replies! I told her that its her fault for speeding and she should pay the fine, and to learn from this lesson lol

thanks, sorted_avensis, that site with the camera locations is very helpful now i know where to be extra careful lol

Or state that your mum is in fact a Manchester United footballer, and thus the speeding fine will be waived.

Titto if ur implyin i knocked it ur wrong, i just simply stated that he must speed now and again!

i know ur prolly not like that titto but most cases i've comes across in my driving experience the filth are just there to make money not for safety. They'll be hidin in a unmarked car or have cameras setup in ridiculous places where THEY KNOW people will speed. i'm sure u've comes across stretched of clear road, no danger for miles, perfect roadsurface so u think sweet open it up a little, guess what a car hiding behind a little mound ready to snaffle ya!

Sorry m8 but stuff like this just erks me off.

Can't rem which post it was but i psoted in there bout me gettin a £30 fine going in a buss lane for literally 2 seconds, not because i wanted to break the law but because i didnt know. U mite sy ignorance is no excuse, but from where i came there were no markings to say otherwise. I havta admit the lass giving the tickets was cool about it. She said it was harsh buy they (the police) were getting paid by the bus service to do this!!!

I'm sorry but wen cops turn in2 mercs that just plain pisses me off :ffs:

neway rant mode off...

heh

I read an amusing tale of speeding the other day.

Woman gets stopped by the police for excess speed. She was very apologetic and cooperative. The policeman, in lecture mode, said 'What if Mr fog was around?'

The woman replied' Well, I'd turn on Mrs Headlights and use Mr Brake to slow the car down a bit.'

At this the officer's attitude changed for the worse and he repeated the question.........'WHAT IF MIST OR FOG WAS AROUND'

Oops.

And my reply would have been something like speak more clearly you village people reject and I would take my ticket with good grace :crybaby:

I would have argued that the mouthfull of donut and the !Removed! fagg moustache precluded my proper understanding of the previous comment

I detest the law, they make me laugh they want you to grass on folks doing wrong then they give out your personal information making you a target for violence.

You try to protect yourself in your own home, the burglar gets less punishment than you.

Instead of picking on normal relatively law abiding folks they should pick on the habitual offenders the likes of whom seem to be on the increase, the penalties for deliberatly driving without insurance should be of a capital nature [/rant]

Master SImon - become an MP and sort out our legal system then!

Zero - mate it is unfortuate, but people tend to forget that fixed penalties are just that - they are way cheaper than if you get reported and end up going to court, fixed penalties are the CHEAPER option. I know its no way of tryin to make you feel better but thats what i tell myself! (esp when i got caught speeding....).

BUT, it does make me laugh when people make out that Police dont get the crims...you get them when they're driving too you know! So a simple speeding stop/bus lane offence - whatever, and a few checks later and theres another one got...

And punishments are set out by government and Courts...

Speeding is a crime, if you commit that crime then you should be punished.

Just because 'everybody does it', that isn't a good enough excuse.

This is the way it is, the Home Office tell the police that road deaths are too high, do something about it.

And Mister Simon, what's this all about?

I detest the law, they make me laugh they want you to grass on folks doing wrong then they give out your personal information making you a target for violence.

You sound like a 12 year old whose been caught skipping school.

Believe me, I'd much rather be catching car theives than speeders will full docs. But someone has to do it.

Zero Blade

They'll be hidin in a unmarked car or have cameras setup in ridiculous places where THEY KNOW people will speed.

If you see that camera, it will make you slow down for the rest of your journey. And of course they set the cameras up in places THEY KNOW people will speed! What would be the point in setting it up on a mini roundabout!?

And pretty much everyone knows you can't go into bus lanes unless there is signs saying so. It's been a bone of contention wil Jeremy Clarkson for years

True, but football referees follow the rules set by the FA, and the inconsistency is blatantly obvious every week.

Like referees, you get good cops with a mind of their own and a bit of common sense, and you get power mad a$$holes.

Traffic police are very inconsistent mainly because it's a career stepping stone to CID or some other higher plane of employment. Motorcycle cops, however, don't have this option. They ride the bikes because they want to, not for career advancement. Instead of it being a rung on a ladder, it's a cul-de-sac.

If you ever get pulled by the police and it's a motorbike then you have a much better chance of talking your way out of it.

When I was a biker, a motorcycle cop told me that if I was speeding and saw a police bike in the mirror, and I didn't reckon that he could read my plate, Hoof it! A recreational jap multi on a country road will easily outrun a police BMW laden down with tons of equipment. Plus, the BMWs don't handle above 95mph. The cop won't give chase because it's only his job and not worth risking a crash and resulting injury or worse.

i guess thats true but i have this view that the speeding law is there for safety, am i rite or wrong?

So i do agree with cameras in areas that are dangerous, but in bits where no harm can come they hide to catch people of guard.

U can argue that people shouldnt be breaking the law in the first place by speeding but often it's plain to see that they set up in these placse to make money rather than enforce the law. sounds weird does that but i hop u get what i'm saying.

What would be the point in setting it up on a mini roundabout!?

well... Roundabout could be very dangerous driving spot depending on location. There's this mint roundabout near me that craves for speedy entry to get ur backend out ;) ahem...

And pretty much everyone knows you can't go into bus lanes unless there is signs saying so.

As for the buslane bit, i know that, but that was my point. u couldnt tell it was a bus lane!!!

Here's a quick scribble of what it looks like (See attachment)

Key:

Black Line = road

Yellow Line = Bus lane bit

Red Dot = Me stopped at traffic lights

i wanted to get to that sretch of road that comes off on the right hand side, after the bus lane bit. Now the proper way to do that it to loop round which is annoying as hell cos it thru backstreets!

neway u can't c signs for the buslane from where i was at the traffic lights until its too l8, i.e. until u've turned into the lane, by which time its too l8, unless u jam on the brakes and swerve back into the left hand land to go straight!

Bora, you cant compare football to real life.

Mainly traffic people are traffic - they hate cid and cid hate traffic. no stepping stones involved!!! But i can assure you BMWs DO handle well, plus the riders are usually brill!

(problem with these text based forums is you cant tell how comments are meant to come across - jus for the record, mine arent to take the ***** but are just a different view!)

The first thing families want to know about when a loved one has been killed by a vehicle is how fast was it travelling. Have a think about it from other prespectives and if people dont like it, dont accept a fixed penalty and go to court!
