Perhaps you've got the adjusting rod the wrong way round. Remember it's the mirror image of the passenger side.

As a matter of interest I've just had a 60K service on my Avensis (only done 42K but stick to service book schedule), several items will need further attention according to the Toyota dealership, including handbrake adjustment for which they've quoted £54!

I complained more than once about the handbrake action when the car was still under warranty - each time they said they fixed it - now the warranty has expired they want me to spend £54 on 'adjustment'.

I wonder how they justify that charge - and I do intend to ask them......

Hi Duffryn. It's an easy job to adjust the handbrake shoes.First of all, make sure the car is secure,on an flat ground.Put the handbrake lever on low position(off).Lift the rear side and take the wheel off.You should see on the disc a rubber plug.Take it out.Turn the disc with the hole on the bottom part.If you look inside the hole you should see the adjusting screw. With a flat screwdriver, turn that screw down to expand the shoes, until the disc locks.Refit the plug hole and the wheel.Drive the car at 50km/h and pull the handbrake lever for 400m.Repeat this procedure 2-3 times.

Hope this helps.

Advice........go onto eBay and get the Avensis Handbook Manual.I got mine on CD and is very good.

Thanks for that D4D2003. Perhaps I'll give it a go (me strictly non tekkie), and I still think £54 is a bit steep too...
