Stpuid Question I Know But

my mate decided to unclip my air box (without telling me) and was driving along last night hit a bump and my car starting growling like mad (Was very nice i admit) turns out the top of my airbox had moved a bit leavin my panel filter exposed now i am tempted to leave it like this until i fit an induction kit, now the question is it safe to leave the top off the box a bit or is my engine gonna blow?
