Toyota Carina 11 Automatic

My Toyota Carina 11 1.6GL automatic had an intermittent fault with the idle speed that ranged from 500 to 850 revs. An alternative Toyota garage in Essex found a fault on the anti running on device and disabled it. They also cleaned the jets of some debris.

The car appeared to run correctly until we went on along day trip. After restarting the car, the car would not idle at all and the only way of driving it was to keep one foot on the accelerator and one foot on the brake.

In despair I took it to a main agent who tuned it (one hours labour) they also suggested renewing all the gaskets in the carburettor. It appears to be running okay except when it is warming up the revs drop to around 700 and once hot run at around 850. Occasionally it will tick over at 1000 revs but if I blip the accelerator, it runs at 850. If anyone should know what fault I have, I would be grateful.

Could be the auto-choke is sticking during the warm up period. It may just need some lubrication? It's simple enough to access - just remove the air filter and its the flap on top of the carb. - check the spindle and the 'stepped' throttle positioner.

You can bring the idle speed up by turning the idle speed screw at the rear of the carb. It has a large white nylon nob and you will have to take the air filter off first. If it sometimes idles correctly it probably is a choke fault. You might find it easier to source another carb from a breakers - they are usually quite cheap. The trouble is now you won't know what the garage has altered - I don't see how the fuel cut off solenoid would have had anything to do with your problem.
