Hi since i have had this car ( +-3 months) i have never seen the so called Lean burn economy light come on and i drive with a very light foot

i seem to be at the petrol stations all the time as it's very thirsty :(

I have given it a full service and all filters changed inc the plugs but it's still the same

Any advice on this please :help:

Also it NEVER idles below 10.000 rpm !!... I thought 7000 was average

My one was the bulb.

The well known manual shows how easy it is to take out instrument cluster to check.

I changed all the bulbs to save taking it out again.

I've always had 46mpg. Still the same at 183000miles.

Cheers

i have also same question. actually i did see that light flashing, but it was in extreme conditions. ... i just purchased that car, and drove hard with drifting and smoky wheels, as car was standing for good while, and there was a water in exhaust, was smoky, and i was blasting crap out.... and some times i did see green eco light flashing.

could somebody explain, when it shall come up ? i assume not when you go sideways, and revs hit the red line. i have same car as op.

thanks

The Econ light should be on and goes out under medium to heavy acceleration/load and big throttle openings. I have not looked into what sensors make it work. I guess it must use the MAF sensor and throttle position, but will need research for future reference.

I have had to change the bulb a couple of times. My car runs from mid 30s to the 40s mpg, and it has done 120,000 miles.

I have the Hayes book so it looks like i will be taking the dash out. Before i do this what bulbs must i get ? As i might as well change the lot

I took the bulbs, I think there were two types, down to the local car emporium for a match. The manual may list them.

In mine the two for the clock have a coloured plastic coating on, as they're on all the time with the ignition. This keeps them dimmer than the rest which are only on in alarm mode, but makes the clock very bright at night. I put uncoated ones in the clock and now keep the brightness control at its lowest. I got used to the bit of extra light from the clock eventually. You may find the bulbs on ~bay.

I expect the econodrive monitor (handbook title) to be on at idle and any time I'm at constant speed with no real load on the engine; normally just lifting my foot a little is enough for the light to come on.

I haven't had my car going sideways yet, touch wood.

When i start her up she sits at 20.000 rpm for quite a while then drops to around 10.000-12.000 and that is where it stays no green light has ever come on ,Also it takes a long time before the temp reach around half way and can go down fairly quickly to say quarter mark as i am driving

If you shine a light through the holes you'll probably see that the functions with these indicators are not fitted on your vehicle.

As mentioned previously the coated bulbs are for the clock.

Hi Andrew,

I looked at your pictures, very good too.

The bulbs for the dash are wedge 286 type 1.2w. They pull out of the holder.

They are also illuminate the heater controls - changed them myself.

From your pictures of oyur dash, you have all the bulbs needed for your particular model (even the from fog lamp on, even though you don't have front fog lights).

The holes are for the functions of other variants, like automatics which have ECT PWR, ECT SNOW, O/D OFF, plus the diesels engine preheat indicator and fuel filter warning light.

When the bulbs start to go silver, they go dim. When replacing any bulbs it is best not to touch them directly, as the oils from you will create hotspots.

Hope this helps.

In addition to my previous post:

It should have all the major warnings such as engine management, ABS, seatbelts, airbag etc as prescribed in your handbook that came with the vehicle.

Great photos Andrew.

I thought I replied to this a few minutes ago but the reply has gone. The bulbs for most of the dash and heater controls are 286 wedge type rated at 1.2w.

As just mentioned the holes are for automatic and diesel versions. I notice that you have a bulb holder for the front fog lamp on warning, even though you don't have front fogs.

I found my other post above. sorry for the repeat.

Carbowax has covered everything.

I thought I'd left a post this morning but don't see it now, where I suggested identifying the symbol on your indicator by shining a torch through it or holding it up to the light if the cluster is out of the dash.

The top right warning lamp, above the econo light, on mine is the rear fog. Doing a search they've been compulsory from around 1980.

My fog lamps (f+r) operate from a twist ring adjacent to the headlamp switch on the indicator/lighting stalk.

The fog lamps should only come on if the headlamps are on.

There are two positions on my switch:

The twist ring on mine turns anticlockwise to switch the lights on.

i)1st position has a detent for front fog

ii)2nd position is a momentary action (sprung) for the rear fog.

Thanks a lot for your help everything is working now inc the fogs :)

I just need to change the thermostat as it takes a long time to get the temp up to half way and goes down to the bottom again as i drive so i suspect it's jammed open.. Although i started her up from cold and both rad pipes heated up at the same time i don't now if that means anything ?

Your thermostat change may solve some of your other issues as currently the engine will always appear cold to the ecu.

Best of luck.
