Overheating When Towing

Hi

We have a Toyota Hilux surf imported 1994

Whenever we tow it overheats. We have had a new head fitted and the problem still persists. the dial just stops short of the red. Only happens when towing and going up hills.

My husband has heard about a factory towing package that he could put on the car that will stop it the temperature shooting up.

Has anyone used this? Where would he buy one from? Does it work? Alternatives?

We are in Basingstoke, hampshire and i know he would be grateful to speak to a person who can advise him as he doesnt do computers

ive had exactly the same problems. solutions ive tried so far are patch the leaks in the top of the rad (helped a little) changed the sensor that switches the elec fan(effective if it cuts in soon enough). Installed an over ride switch on same sensor so i have more control when it switches on. drained the water system and flushed out thoughly. Spent ages getting rid of excess air in rad and matrix. So far its better but not perfect. Next job is to change the rad but been advised to do the matrix at same time (expensive).

Ive still got a gurgling coming from the matrix so a new one would erradicate any debis flowing round the water system. Some advise removing or blocking the EGR valve but ive not seen much improvment doing that.

As i only tow now 3 or 4 times a year ive ut off any major work due to the expence and i just anticipate hills on routes and rest the engine a while before big hills. Every day use is absolutely fine, and will run up and down a motorway at 70 without overheating. Youll find some very specific advice on http://www.hiluxsurf.co.uk/ As for that tow pack, never heard of it.

- temp sensor failure or el contact failure;

- radiator clogging;

- cooling pump failure;

- expansion tank lid gasket failure (not leak proof)

- thermostatic valve failure;

- el fan failure;

- air in cooling system

- too much scale inside the block;

- when installed head -- one could positionning gasket covering coolant passing holes

check and revert/Igor
