Japanese Model Names of Toyota

Recommended Posts

Here are a few I know off the top of my head...

Kluger V -----> Highlander in U.S.

Windom ------> Lexus ES300 in US and UK

Soarer --------> Lexus SC430 in US and UK

bB ---------> Scion xB in US (I drive one!)

Yaris ----------> Echo in Australia, Canada and USA

Ist ----------> Scion xA in US

Land Cruiser is called Land Cruiser everywhere, but there is more than one model, unlike in the US.

Land Cruiser Prado is just one model of Land Cruiser, there are several.

have you ever seen this toyota corolla model in your country?

Can anyone tell me what the Toyota Corolla Verso is known as in Japan.  Also what would be the main differences in the UK  model compared to the Japanese model?

Yes I have seen a lot of these corolla versos in Ireland, they are called the SPACIO, regd from 01 to 03. The most noticeable difference is the grille

emblem. I dont think it can be xchanged with a toyota emblem.

the aerial is also smaller. The hubcaps are of a different style as well.

i also noticed that the european corolla verso is not sold in Japan, as they still

make the MK 2 version which we got as the Mk1 over here but i looked at

a pontiac vibe which is also built on a corolla chassis. This car somehow forms

the basis of the European Verso but a different front and a much smaller roof rail

I'm trying to compose a list of all the names of toyota models and thier comparable model name in the UK.

Apparently this could be a the basis for a PHD thesis as Toyota seem to have a different name for thier vehicles on different days of the week.

My intention is to post the results on my site www.spam.com

Any help would be appreciated.

I'll start it off...

Apparently

Prado = Land Cruiser

Anyone know of any more?

Cheers

Paul

Ok ive just read all the names of these cars and the majority of them are

not pronounced in the same way as we pronounce them in english. Hauling through so many japanese websites which provide an english translation shows that names are pronounced differently, due to the interpretation by the japanese

of the english alphabet

for example the Citroen Xsara is pronounced Zara

The Corolla is pronounced Korora

Aerotourer is pronounced Earotsarar or something like it!

Crown is pronounced Craun

Runx is pronounced Rancs

The list goes on,

some of the names sounds like Russian!

The new Corolla Verso is built in Turkey and was designed for Europe only - nothing to do with Japanese market Spacio/old Verso. (BTW Avensis Verso is Ipsum in Japan).

The Corolla is pronounced Korora

Aerotourer is pronounced Earotsarar or something like it!

Crown is pronounced Craun

Runx is pronounced Rancs

I'm assuming your taking the p*** since the cars are called what they are called. National accents have no part in it (i.e. some parts of the world pronounce Celica as chel-i-ka, not sell -i-ka but the car is Celica).

The Japanese see Western things and English words as being very aspiration and cool, hence items such as alloy wheels with apparently random words on them. Even suburban shops with no likelihood of seeing a tourist have English signs above the front window.

Of course there are many humorous miss-uses, like the soft drink called 'Sweat'. Unproven, but funny is the story that Mitsubishi called the Station (70's/80's sports coupe) because the Japanese were trying to say Stallion (as in Pony Car).

thats pretty much just a rumor- Mitsubishi stated the name was the combination of the words star, and orion. The original japanese brochure for the starion uses a space, star filled theme- right on par with the car's then space age aerodynamics...

I recently checked out a yahoo japan website called www.rinkya.com and could

only so far type in the word toyota. I clicked on a number of corolla fielder

(estate in japan) and the word "fielder" was phoneticially typed as "firuda"

so what u see is pronounced differently.

I'm in New Zealand, and we own two Toyota Carib Sprinters. '88 and '98.

Both Jap imports

Am trying to figure out which Haynes manual to get for them. Any ideas?

According to the Dog & Lemon Guide, the Sprinter/Sprinter Carib is a Corolla variant, 90 series, 1988-93. 100 series 1993-97.

The Dog & Lemon Guide is a good source for model names in the various markets.

Forget trying to identify a specific vehicle throughout the ages by the model name. The names jump around, not just across markets, but they move from one platform to the next size on a whim. Our last vehicle was a JDM Isuzu Wizard (4-door long wheelbase 2nd-generation Mu) which not only changes model name but brand - independently of each other - in the various markets. It was also sold as a badge-engineered Honda, as were several siblings.
