A new internet craze called milking, which involves students pouring pints of milk over their heads in public places, is set to take on planking.

Social media sites are abuzz over milking, with online interest growing quickly in the new fad being tweeted and talked about this week.

A milking YouTube clip has racked up over 200,000 hits on the video-sharing website in less than a week.

It shows students and graduates in Newcastle throwing four-pint containers of milk over themselves in public places.

Newcastle University appears in one of the shots, as do a number of bars, shopping areas and busy roundabouts.

Opinion appears divided over milking, with one user describing it as 'the most pointless craze ever'.

Another added: 'This is stupid. The concept of pouring milk over oneself has no meaning or usefulness.'

However interest appears to be growing, with reports of copycat milking montages filmed in universities in Edinburgh, Nottingham and Oxford.

'It started off as a bit of a dare really, just us messing about in the kitchen,' Northumbria University student George Hoyland told Sky.

'We found it so funny that we decided to make more videos.’

Fellow 'milker' Tom Symington added: 'We know it's ridiculous, everyone is saying that and we completely accept that.

'It's a bit of enjoyment, it's making people laugh and I think the positive reaction outweighs the negative.'

Last year planking, an activity which involves lying face down in unusual places, became a global trend across various social network platforms.

I thought many students are struggling for cash what with the fees etc.

Whats the point in wasting good milk then.

When Kids are starving in Africa it seems a terrible waste.

I feel sorry for the poor kids who are lactose intolerant. They have to resort to pouring soy milk on their heads. :(
