My son has a Toyota Sera with a 5EFHE (Sept 1990)

We're in Sydney.

I was just wondering whether he's better off trying to replace an apparently blown piston, or gettin another engine. What's the best value for money here? Are there other pistons that will fit? Are there other engines than the 5EFHE that will go in?

Putting my hands on a new 5EFHE isn't proving all that easy either.

Are there any mechanics who are particularly good at doing these swaps?

Starlet turbo engine will fit. (Can't remember the number )

I seem to recall that the pistons from the Starlet will fit in a Sera. These are tougher pistons than the Sera has anyway.

It's easier to replace the pistons than the engine.

Australia has a healthy Sera community. Have you contacted them about sourcing spare parts?

www.toyotasera.co.uk can help you out with parts if you're having bother finding them.

5E-FHE is quite a rare engine, used in all Seras and some Cynos.

5E-FE will fit, direct swap, mostly used in Paseos. Less powerful than a 5E-FHE

4E-FTE Starlet turbo, fairly easy swap, used in Starlet turbos. More powerful than a 5E-FHE despite smaller engine size.

I have some Sera pistons if required.

I would not use Starlet turbo pistons as they are lower compression.

An engine swap (like for like) is easier than stripping and rebuilding engine.

The problem with a Sera and fitting a Starlet turbo is that you have to fit a bonnet vent - or be prepared to sacrifice air conditioning to fit the intercooler.
