Why does black ivory coffee taste so good? Because it comes out of an elephant’s rear end, that’s why.

The new brew is one of the most expensive in the world at £30 a cup, as every bean used to make it has to be plucked out of a pile of elephant dung.

Producers in Thailand say feeding the ingredients to their herd of 20 elephants improves the flavour, as the animals’ stomach acid makes them less bitter.

The coffee, dubbed crap-uccino, has already become the butt of jokes.

But it seems Canadian Blake Dinkin, who has spent £300,000 developing the idea, may have the last laugh. The first 70kg batch of coffee he produced in northern Thailand has sold out.

‘There’s definitely something wild about it that I can’t put a name on,’ said US tourist Ryan Nelson, 31, after trying it at a hotel near the elephants’ home.
