hi everyone, i'm a new celica owner, got my self an st185 gt4 jap import and i love it. the gt4 is fast, i beat civic type R, ren clio 2 litre 16V, golf GTI 2 litre MK3 and a nissan pulsar gti-r. i want the car to reach 320 bhp, what are the best mods for it. i've seen a garret turbo which kicks out 420 bhp but its a bit pricy.

Congratulations on the purchase the ST185 is a fine car :)

I will assume that yours is the air/air model rather than the RC for starters, to reach 320 BHP be prepared for some serious wallet bashing there are not many ST185's out there with over 300 BHP as a list of mods required I would look at the following (not an exclusive list I may miss things out)

New Plugs, Leads, Distributor cap, Rotor arm

Full exhaust system with downpipe replacing the CAT

Induction Kit

Hybrid or Full aftermarket Turbo

An aftermarket engine management system

Uprated fuel pump

Larger injectors (ST205 ones are a popular choice)

Metal Headgasket

Uprated internals (forged pistons etc)

Replacement intercooler either front mount or the chargecooler from the Carlos Sainz or ST205

Uprated clutch

Possibly water injection

That is the list of mods I would be looking at to get a reliable 320 BHP from the ST185 - you may be able to do it with less mods but sacrificing reliability.

I would estimate that the above at a minimum would cost circa £4000 thats using a piggyback ECU, a hybrid turbo, a cheaper uprated clutch, and a DIY FMIC kit.

If you were to go for a full aftermarket ECU, a different turbo, quality clutch and a chargecooler or better frontmount I think you would be looking more in the region of £6-7000.

Neither of those estimates are counting labour cost if you can't do the work yourself.

When you mention the Garrett Turbo kicking out 420 BHP - thats what the turbo is good for - you gotta have the rest of the mods to support it aswell.

I don't write this meaning to put you off but just realise what you potentially maybe taking on.

The ST185 responds very well to the basic mods, otherwise you might want to consider trying to source an newer 3S-GTE engine from a ST205 or MR2 as these are approximately 40BHP more powerful as standard.

Hope this gives you something to think about. :)

also i have been advised that the revision 3 MR3 3S-GTE is a lot more modding friendly than the older MR2 engine revision...

I like the GT4 body style and all, but being an ST185 I would say just do what little things you can to beef it up a little bit. If you want a beast, get ahold of an ST205.
