Camry 2000 - Trac & Abs Lights

2000 CAMRY XLE - 3.0L V6 55000 Miles.

Recently have problems where the TRAC light flashes (approximately once per sec) and the ABS light stays ON as soon as we start the engine.

There is no pattern or consistency on this problem, and we couldn't relate it to temperature or humid weather. It just comes on once every 3 or 4 days. Other time everything seems normal.

Any idea if this is due to a bad speed sensor? How to check this out or that must be done by the dealer? Is this an expensive item to be fixed?

Thanks for all comments/advice!

You can check this out yourself. There is info in the Haynes manual to access these codes, but this should be a warrenty repair.

Called Toyota Dealer and they said this is not a warranty item after 3 years. :(

Minimum charge for problem diagnosis is 1 hour for labour and no guarantee that 1 hour can track down the problem ?? No clue on how much that'll ends up with!

Any suggestion/advice?

It would be worth it to get a Haynes manual for the testing procedure. There is alot of other info in there also.

Thanks Joe for the replies!

One more question... I was about to buy an OBD-II Code Reader for locating the faulty speed sensor, but someone told me OBD-II doesn't read ABS speed sensor problems. Is that true?

Any input will be much appreciated!

That is true. However these codes are accessed by the data link connecter. There are three different systems used and they are all addressed in a Haynes manual.(The code descriptions are also there).

I just traded my 2001 v6 camry for a 2004 matrix.

For 2 years I've had problems with it and nobody could fix it.

The TRACK @ CHECK engine lights were on a lot sometimes flashing.

I've had the fuelinjectors replaced, the EGR valve, but the problem remained.

(under warranty)

At high RPM the engine would hesitate, occasionally would not start or stall.

These problem however, would not occur all the time.

Finally I had to go !!!

It was a lemon.

It happens to the best, too.
