Motorway Driving With Aftermarket Exhaust

hi all,

on tuesday i'm getting a back box made up for me. i'm getting a large 6x4 oval design.

i want it to burble on idle and sound sporty when u floor it, but seeing as i do a lot of motorway driving (twice a week to kent - 1 and a half hrs) i dont want it to be too intrusive and annoying

so what do i do. do i go for a tuneable back box so i can put the baffle in for the motorway or stick with what i got?

on a scale of 1 to 10 how loud should i ask for it to be?

cheers in advance

Make it 10 loud .. and then get a huge ICE install to drown it out :)

thinking of about 8 loud and then upgrade fronts.

knowlson, in the garage it says that you have alpine 8inch mids. are they in the front doors and if so how did you fit them?

I have about a 9 out of 10 on the loudness front  on the motorways it's dire, but that's coz most of the time Nicola is in the car with me and keeps turning the stereo down complaining that both stereo and zorst are too loud :P

seriously now, I am busy looking for a quieter alternative because I have really had enough of the attention it attracts from silly little boy-racers and goons that just want to try prove something. some ****** tried racing me the other morning when I had my 60 year old mother in the car  :censor: head!

By the way Ed, who is doing the work? I have seen some very bad examples of something someone (who was in Gold) did to another members exhaust. You gotta be carefull

I only read that much and was preparing for war.

Garricks car is really loud on the motorway, sometimes I have to put my fingers in my ears.

I think a loud zorst and stereo is a bad idea as you then go deaf.

Go for a loudness of 7.

i guess that's the sensible approach...

but... a loud zort sounds awsome on the m-way, specially with something like a K&N aswell. stereo comes on high with some tunage. the only time its a problem is when theres some1 else sitting with u on the m-way, u can hardly hear 'em!

Totally agree with you on that!

My Celica had a custom made zprst 5.5" tip and booming japstyle back box...

Man i could not stand that thing on the motorway as everytime ya put ya foot even slightly on the gas.. you and all the cars in a 20 meter radius could also hear you!!!

by the end of a 275mile journey.. i could still hear the humming for 15 mins after i got back in the house!:wacko:

bahh... stick with 7... and no more!..

the full system i have on the yaris (well not at the mo) is insanely loud, it actually registers at about 15 on the scale. it makes the car go like hellfire but damn you know its there.

just got the tailbox at the mo for a level 5 burble!

Get a nice Blitz Nur Spec R then simply put the silencer in when you go down the motorway :D

well the other reason i was thinking to get one at about level 8 is coz i have an induction kit which is very very loud when you floor it (quiet when driving normally) so i dont want the car to be too loud. my parents would disown me if it was too nova'esque.

garrick - getting it done by the local powerflow dealer. they have a good reputation as i know people who have had boxes off them. they also give me the TOC discount so i almost completely make back the money spent on gold membership, which is nice

heres a pic of what i'm gonna get (one rather than two)

talking about eardrum, as the b-line was pumping, the window was up, when I put the window down a bit, it felt as if my ears was gonna pop, but like on a plane

whats this loudness scale your all on about, is it a proper meter or just some bull**** you've made up as surely everyone's definition of 'loud' and 'acceptable' is different....

I wonder where mine would come on this scale, its rumbly on tickover, loud(ish) on accelleration upto about 3500 then drops off to really quite.....

It took a long time to get it right, the annoying thing is at 70mph my car is under 3500rpm so the exhaust is till a little loud but over 70mph it gets quieter and quieter, sometimes i wish it was silent at 70mph when on the mway for long periods of time :(

john, basically theres no scale. was just using at a rough measure. i basically am after my exhaust to be like yours. burble at idle, loud up to 4k rpm and then tail off. is yours custom made?

in my opinion

1 is basically just an improvement over the original sound

10 is ear splitting and can be heard 4 streets away
