Rav4 4D4 _ 2004 - Loss Of Power At 1500 Rpm

Hi all, My wife's RAV4 will not run above 1500/2000 rpm in any gear since refuelling (definitely diesel). The engine light is on and because the fault code was P0627 I've removed and refitted the scv valves but to no avail. It used to do this occasionally at 3000rpm but has been OK for a couple of years now since only using Shell fuel - (in spite of the local Toyota dealer insisting it needed a new turbo). It runs perfectly well up to 1500rpm in any gear and there is no smoke or unusual noise. It,s done 88,000 miles and had a fuel filter at 70,000. Any thoughts or details of independent specialists around Leighton Buzzard or Tring would be gratefully received.

P0627 is usually the SCVs and when they are gone they are gone proper. They can only be recovered in rare cases. I would try the fuel filter first but if not I'm afraid you are going to have to cough up.

All the best and welcome to the club.

I have removed your duplicated post.

Thanks very much Ancorman - I'll let you know how I get on and thanks also for a great site.

Sorry about the duplicate posts - I haven't got to grips with the process yet!

Changed the fuel filter and all is now fine - it was full of a brown, fine sand-like substance even tho' the filter was only changed about 25k miles ago.

Thanks again for your assistance

So could this be another case of Winter Fuel Additive causing this blockage.....? 25k miles is not excessive for a fuel filter....or is it?

Big Kev.

Filters can last very high mileages. Problems often come from these very quiet backwater garages where the throughput of fuel is low. It is a combination of water/condensation and corrosion from the inside of the tanks underground. Your big posh high fuel turnover garages purge that much fuel through them they tend not to have the chance to accumilate crud.

The filter is like a sponge that soaks up all the rusty, muddy crud and water. In some cases its a wonder they last as long as they do.
