Steering Noise

I have an avensis 2.0 SR 2002 and just had it back to Toyota... they say toyota are looking into a cure for it? i keep getting a dry grinding noise when i steer at standstill? Toyota say there is a modification they have done on the power steering pump..This worked for about a day but now the same thing is back...grrrrr.... Can anyone please help??

I've had two new steering racks to cure this. The first one didn't solve the problem but the second one has been on six months now and I've not heard the noise since it was fitted. Avensis 1.8 2001. Known problem according to my dealer.

I have a 51 saloon, bought it a couple of weeks ago. It too had noisy steering. Dealer fitted new steering rack - problem solved.

Used to have a 2001 1.8 manual and would occasionally get a 'whine' when turning from stand still. Not a dry grinding noise but maybe related ?

could you tell me wich dealer you got your new steering rack?

what did they say to you when you asked them to fix it?

john roe subikhorpe say they cant fix it untill toyota have found a cure for this problem?

Took my car to the Northampton dealer cause my fuel cap was stuck. While I was there I told them about my noisy steering. Half an hour later the fuel cap was fixed, they said I needed a new rack. They booked it in for a week later, they even collected and returned my car to my work (25 miles away). All this under the warranty.

They did say it was a common problem. Get on to your dealer with this info, they should fix it for you.

My X Reg, Avensis just gone in for a service today, and I have been doing a little checking on this problem 'cos mine has it. Spoke to Toyota head office and the dealer. The dealer agrees that it is a known problem that Toyota are working on and that they can't do much until there is a fix. They have already replaced my rack under warrantee once, and the chap picking up mine says that one person has had theirs done three times, it appears to be a design flaw. I have asked for and the dealer has agreed to supply a letter stating the facts on this, and to agree that once the fix is released from engineering I will get it fitted under warantee. I'll keep you posted if I hear any more.

A fix is being looked into

It was originally thought the new rack was a full cure but after 6 months the noise came back

A fix is in the pipeline (new modded rack)& theres alot waiting for it but should be available in the next 6-8 weeks hopefully
