What's the light look like? Have you checked for Error codes?

Have you thought about re-seting the ECU?

Any mods on the car?

There could be a number of causes, including an air leak somewhere, or a fault with the ignition system.... but initially, I agree with Bibbs, yuou should check for diagnostic codes. You need to locate the diagnosis plug in the engine bay, and connect terminals E1 and TE1 with a piece of wire. Turn on the ignition (but do not start the car). The orange engine light will start flashing. If it is a continuous flash, then there are no stored codes. However, if it flashes a few times, pauses then flashes again, then you know there are some codes there. To read them, count the first number of flashes, then the second number after the pause. For example code 14 would be stored as one flash, a pause then four flashes. You may have more than one code stored (if there is just the one it will keep looping) so be sure to check that the following code is indeed the same thereby indicating one code stored.

Not sure about the essex area, but why not read off the ECU codes first. Once we know that, there's a good chance someone will be able to point you in the right direction, which will save some of the garage diagnostic costs, you may even be able to fix it yourself and just pay for the price of a new part....
