Well folks we have been over to see our local dealer with a view to PX-ing our Rav on either a Yaris or an Aygo.??

We was offered £4000 for the Rav in PX,maybe a little more but not a lot if we have the 62 plate Aygo, which Mrs P had a drive in and she liked it this time round.

Main use will be to and from work,a round trip of 20 miles, and then daughters trip to work another 14miles.

Plus points -no tax, great MPG,lower insurance,5 year warranty.Seemed to be roomy in the back with two of us in there, and seemed quiet when out on the road.

Neg points-Just that its a four seater.

We would like more for the RAV so we are now thinking of selling private so what would be a reasonable price for it or is the dealers offer a decent one.

Its coming upto 50,000 on the clock now,and has full service history, and is in exceptional condition for the year,2004.

I'd suggest you use webuyanycar. I'm looking for a used Land Cruiser and the prices garages offered for mine at the opening of the batting were exactly their figure of £4500. They reckoned I could get £5500 on a good day privately but I would have spent £100 on a valet (it needs it) and at least £50 on an ad. I might try suresell though while you can set a reserve (say £5000 in my case) if it does not reach that you have to pay the fee anyway. On the other hand two people may get carried away.

Based on what you say you might get £5000 tops.

Webuyanycar.con generally give fairly good price quotes to tempt in the victims and then knock down that price significantly due to them deciding it was not as described.

So as a way to get someone else to up their offer, it is good, but as an actual place to sell your car, not the best.

Would never sell to a dealer, will never get what its worth, eBay classifieds for me with the offer option. Will always end up with more money in the pocket.

More hassle with people coming to view, but the £'s count.

If the dealer offers you £4000, i would try eBay with £4700, people will offer less, but you can accept a price better than the dealer.

I tried we buyanycar and they offered way below what i got private.....cheecky bar stewards

Last car i sold on eBay was a citroen xsara coupe got £350 more than webuyany car offered, and £300 more than the dealer.

It may be worth checking out "Honest John". He doesn't recommend webuyanycar, but does have another site. Sadly I can't remember the name, but the HJ website does reply fairly quickly to questions. I had a quote from wbac, for my old BMW, and it was frankly an insult. The main dealer offered 2500 more!

We went to another local Toyota dealer this afternoon to look at a 1.3 Yaris, which when we got there they never had,so Mrs P had a drive in a 1.0 Yaris,09 plate, just under 20,000 on the clock and was more spacious than the Aygo but seemed noisier???

We was offered £4400 for the Rav to start which was increased to £4700 at this dealers which really surprised us as we thought the value on the mornings offer would have come up on their system??

We nearly took the deal but summat was just putting us both off,not sure what it was though?

How much are the fees on eBay when selling a car for several thousand hopefully??

Daughters boyfriend thought he had a good deal with WBAC when he phoned em up,i've never seen him move so fast to get his car upto em,but soon came back with it and looking even more glum. :disgust:

He said they went over it with a fine tooth comb and picked up any little mark and knocked money off for each mark and ended up with a daft offer in the end.

Seriousfully, Paul.....imagine a long motorway journey with a Wan Litre engine screaming in your ear.......would not wish that journey on my worst enemae, mucker.

Your very clean Rav is worth 4.5 to 5k in a private sale, so cool the beans.......

Recently got nephew a very clean Auris 1.6 petrol, and am genuinely impressed therewith....do not discount it (not the new shape.)

They quoted me 2kgbp less than RRG Macclesfield, both sight unseen.....shower of sheisters. The first 6 letters of sheisters is an anagram in order to beat Barbara Castle, obviously involved in the censorship programme hereon.

eBay classifieds cost me £14.99 for 28 days....its a set fee. Its different to the normal eBay fees and is specifically setup for selling vehicles. You have the option to allow the bidders to make an offer and you can define an auto reponse to agree the sale once someone bids what you want.

I think one if the issues selling a car is that very few buy privately now..

Do an auto trader search for most any car and look at how many are trade sales and how many are private ....

That said Autotrader or in my experience Pistonheads is a better option than inviting a clown party by putting the car on eBay ..

Paul I'm happy to pop over and help out with pictures and will set you up a good advert on PH which I can do for free.. No problems at all mate ...

On value... It really is down to the condition if the car and from pictures your one looks a cracker.. A well worded and well put together advert that catches the eye and imagination is absolutely paramount and will draw in the serious punter ..

That said I would have agreed with Kev 4 to 5 K..... But if sold privately it allows at least a chance of getting a discount moving forward...

I hope our conversations on the phone have been constructive ?? Just let me know if I can help it really is not a problem and you have the strictest if confidence here..

Paul I just can't help but thinking this move will not actually help with finances .. Any money saved in day to day running costs will be negated by expenditure on buying a replacement car and the loss ( if any) on your current car..

The difference between a car that does say 30 MPG and one that does 40 takes quite some time to make financial returns....

Take care mate !

Charlie

Thank you for all your replies folks much appreciated

Well Mrs P and meself had a good long chat last when we had five minutes on our own and have now decided to try and hang onto the Rav for as long as we can and hope things take a turn for the better soon.

Servicing with Mr T will be out the question now so will just be left to my old mukka to do if he's got time??

We also would have needed to do a PX deal as we would have had no transport to get oot and aboot to look at other cars, which we never thought of

Charlie-THanks for the calls info and advice and am on track with what you said so we will just have to see how that pans out??

At least we have a better idea of what car to replace the Rav with now if it comes to it?

Thanks all.

Yes downsizing the way way we were was a really big step to take as we both said last night after driving the other two cars.

I just hope we can keep the Rav for as long as we can, besides we'd miss forum :(

I am glad to hear you are keeping your RAV for now Paul. I think you would really miss it. I do have an Aygo and it is ok for short journeys and parking in "dodgy areas" but not a "proper" car like my wife's RAV. I have only once been on the motorway in the Aygo and, whilst some Aygo drivers would disagree, I found it quite scary! The Aygo has no real power for pulling up hills even without passengers! I really enjoy driving the RAV and it is the car I drive at weekends and on holiday - the Aygo is cheap no frills driving as a second car but I wouldn't want it to be our main car.

Al the best,

David

Don't do what I did. I downsized to a Kia Soul. Cracking little car and did exactly what we expected. However, we just missed the RAV and not only did I loose my lovely Tidal Blue RAV but had to re-spend to get back to a 10 plate. It may well have cost me 5k and that is bit tongue in cheek.

Paul given your back injury I honestly think an Aygo would have been a huge mistake.. Auris is nice wee car and is on the wife's shortlist as I have to buy her an Automatic car after the move (If we have any money left at all !!)

Hang in there and hopefully the programme we discussed will help a little !

Charlie.....pay special attention to handbrake release button AND its position relative to wife having seat forward unless she is your height. Maybe changed on new one, but only minor niggle even my nephew has with current excellent model.

Thanks.. I did notice its an unusual affair on a pretty unusual centre console ! Will make sure we check that out as she has problems with her left hand... To tell the truth I think her driving days are limited... But how do you tell someone who is fiercely independent or at least tries to be that... To use a famous BK word... Gubbered ..

We was going to go and have a look at a 1.3 Auris tomorrow, still might, but have since noticed that the insurance/tax is higher compared to the 1.3 Yaris.Anyone know why this is as they look to be very similar cars??

The Yaris (2006-2011) and the Auris (2007-2012) are in two different market segments - the Yaris being B segment (Fiesta/Polo/Jazz competitor) whilst the Auris is C segment (Focus/Golf/Civic competitor).

Sizes: Yaris TR 3785mm length, 1695mm width, 1530mm height, 1080kg weight, 272-738 litres boot capacity. Insurance group 7. CO2 emissions 120 g/km

Auris TR 4220mm length, 1760mm width, 1515mm height, 1285kg weight, 354-761 litres boot capacity. Insurance group 10. CO2 emissions 136 g/km

Insurance groups are partly worked out on cost to repair - the Auris being a bigger car, with more expensive parts would be in a higher insurance group.

Vehicle Excise Duty is based on CO2 emissions - again the Auris being a bigger, heavier car would have worse emissions.
