hi people,

need some advise.

i have a 2008 2l d-4d avensis and i kept hearing a funny noise whilst driving. so i inspected and noticed that the turbo air intake had come off also the oil light came on. i topped up and took it to a garage (non toyota) the guy there said that i should put a jubilee clip and that should stop. well i did so, in fact he changed it for me and it was really tight. a week or so later same thing happened the pipe had came off again. this time i put it back myself. whilst doing so, noticed that it was very oily but dont know if its suppose to be like. and to finish oil level is going down and i dont have leak or have noticed exhaust smoking. i hope my turbo isnt going to pack up soon?!?!?!?!? :disgust: :disgust: :disgust: :disgust:

i hope this makes sense and any advise or similar happenings let me know.many thanks

regards

I'm not hugely experienced on turbos but I am pretty damn sure that oil in your air intake pipe is a bad thing. Time for some professional help perhaps?

if there is oil in the intake pipe that is bad,,, i think the only way it can get there is from the turbo oil seal. if the noise continued after u put the pipe back on then the bearings have gone as well. if it didnt then they will very soon. I dont know if one can just replace the seal or not. however if i did that i would be worried that the bearing would go and id have to do all that work again.

sorry to be the barer of bad news

hi thx for info

but the noise will came when the pipe cames off. as soon the pipe is on noise stops.

when i said that there was oil around the pipe, is because even i tightened the clip it still felt a bit slippery...

so you think i should go to toyota garage????

thx

I would strip the lose pipe out and give it a good inspection looking and feeling for oil. If there is no oil or very little then clean it up and reassemble it trying to get a clean, dry joint. Check the clips - 'they don't make them like they used to' so they may be worn out. Re-inspect it in a week or so looking for oil.

You may find that your mechanic used a little oil to ease the pipe back on - you mentioned it being really tight. If the pipe is really tight a little silicone spray will help it back on but, from the sounds of things it is also helping it back off.

Try to determine what is making the pipe come off. Is it really old? Are the clips a bit worn? If it may be worth buying (1) new clips then (2) a replacement pipe to try to resolve the issue - but that does rather depend on cost.

I wouldn't go to a Toyota garage yet. They are pretty good but they are pretty flipping expensive. A local garage with a good reputation should be able to help with this - even if you just pop in and ask them their opinion.

Good luck.

hey druid boy.

wow, thx a lot for your help, you really took some time to think about it. so for that cheers.

also i went to toyota earlier today and a guy came out and looked at it and said that that was weird for that pipe to came off as it only takes air in, he also said that its possible that this car uses ( burns ) oil at a liter per 1000 miles, so that part i only need to keep topping up. he also advised me to change the fuel filter to the newer ones cause they are better, he said that i still have the old type. ( i bought 1 for £30) . going back to air intake having a little oil in it, he said that a seal could be broken or worn out ( cant remember the name of seal) and if that keeps happening could be that the turbo on the way out. and he said the same thing, remove pipes and give them a good clean.

well from that i think its a bit premature for this turbo to go????!?!?!?!?!? and is this engine prone to turbo failure???

i have this car now for 10 months and nothing wrong with it and only has 44k miles.

anyway thx to all of you who helped with posts.

i will keep adding to here after i take the pipes out and give them as good clean..

cheers

ps toyota did not charge me today for anything, 1st time i get advice from a main dealer free of charge ;)

Hey coop

it's kinda dificult to say, but if i had to pick 1, i'd say clean oil. its not a lot of oil but i think enough for it to keep sliding off. but like the mechanic from toyota said, it's wierd as this pipe only takes air in so force is going agaisnt.

anyway i havent had time to clean it, am off at the weekend so will do it and change the fuel filter too and see any improvements.

I just had a look on Euro Car Parts, fell of my seat when I saw the price! I presume an internet search would bring up local/UK companies who refurb them. Doesn't look like its going to be a cheap fix though. Good luck.

hi druid

what happened was that the turbo sucked in the rubber ring around the air intake.

now does that make the turbo useless for good or can i(garage) take it out clean it and use it again. its only rubber.

will that rubber go into the engine and if so, will it damage engine???

i got a quote for new turbo for £1650 all included from toyota.

i am relly ****** off, not even 50k on the clock.

I dunno if the rubber will have damaged the turbo but I expect its a matter of where it landed and what happened next - eg did it starve the oil supply. A specialist should be able to advise you there. As for rubber damaging the engine I can't imagine that it would unless there was big lumps of it. More likely that it just got chewed up a bit, burnt a bit and what was left got spat out of the exhaust.

Update:

i went to toyota (the is driving with whistle noise) they had a look and said that the rubber that went into turbo damaged 2 fins of the 'fan'.

so they said i have 2 options; new turbo, will cost me £1717 all included or 2nd option; removed the damaged turbo sent away to recondition, and that will cost me £1100.

so far i am looking into other place that do it cheaper, so am waiting for their quotes.

i would need a new pipe that goes from air filter to turbo, does anyone know where i can find 1 and what is it called???

thx

Where is this rubber seal and how happened to be sucked?

The rubber seal is between air intake pipe and turbo, it goes around turbo intake pipe. Basically turbo some how makes suction/pressure other way too. That way it pulls inake pipe away and then it sucks in the rubber.

hi there.

as you know i had same problem and it cost me over £1000 to fix it. and i found out that the reason that this happened to me is that engine breather is leaking a little extra oil through it. so if there are any people out there that have this similar problem ( turbo air intake slipping off) just remove the membrane around inside air intake and put a jubilee clip on it and for sure would resolve the problem. as why there is extra oil coming of engine breather maybe pcv valve needs checking.

did the turbo sucked all the rubber?

if it had it will make that whistling noise and that is because it damaged the turbo fins. and to fix that is to get it out and send it to recondition it.

I didn't see rubber seal... From air filter box to turbo there is big rubber hose (pipe) with jubilee clips.

yes it did sucked in all the rubber and makes whistle noise now. Waiting today to arrive new recon turbo. Really annoying thing to happen.. Had problems for some time with car poor start in the mornings when temp below +10C, nobody could find the problem till in finally wold not start at all. What caused it was SCV valve, but now lack in power or any other symptoms appeared. After replacing that all back to normal.

Regarding rubber seal I will put jubilee clip hope it helps.

yes it will def help but do not put the membrane around it as i had that in with jubilee clip and it still managed to slip off.

also what i did after turbo replaced, i changed the oil twice and removed EGR valve and gave it a good old clean.

and so far (touch wood) all is good.

hope all will be ok with you too.

well i was told not to put that rubber membrane around turbo air intake. so what i did was just to put a jubilee clip around it and tighten it without the rubber.

this has proven to work, and since i done that it hasnt come off at all.

maybe you should try it.

good luck

bad luck with the turbo mate.

I have rebuilt many turbos and its not the black art its made out to be.

parts are available ( if turbo is strippable)

do a wee search on google for "turbo chra" and "the turbo guy" to give yourself a bit of knowledge.

the inducer and exducer of the compressor wheel is very fragile and balanced and this will be no doubt damaged with the foreign object

the rest should be ok so should be easy cheap compressor wheel fit and balance.

as for your worries of anything entering engine - this is slim.

ive had a few turbos having shat their guts out and not got past the intercooler.

intercooler will need cleaned out.

another note is the oil you describe

very common to get a film of oil on the induction hosing from breather entering intake after maf but before turbo.

you can imagine if the air filter is blocked there will also be more suction at the breather.

hopefully any pcv system should stop this.

I just bought my avensis from my neighbour who knows diesels and he has done a breath to atmosphere mod and blanked the egr to let the diesel engine function the way it wants to. he showed me the immaculate air intake when he was servicing it last month.

especially
