Advice Re1999 Heat Shudder On Turning Circle.

Hello All,

When reversing out of tight spaces and when I am at full turning lock the car shudders

until I move the steering wheel back to its central driving position and then all is well.

The full turning lock on this vehicle seems very short and I wondered if anyone with a similar Rav 4 like Bothwell with his 2 1994 Mk 1s can throw any light on this annoying shudder that I have got to check every time I put full lock on when reversing and then correcting to go forward. Any others suffered from this all advice gratefully received. Thank you Blackbear.

You shure it isn't stuck in 4WD?

Thanks Anchorman,

I do not think so but I will investigate it and see what the results are. Blackbear.

Sounds a bit like the tyre skip that the Mk1 Yaris has; At full lock the front wheels aren't aligned properly and one of them gets dragged sideways slightly.

Yes sounds like it is stuck in four wheel drive, its an awful feeling you get, feels really weird in the car

Hello All,

I think I have found the cause. My Rav 4 has Permanent 4 wheel drive and central diff lock. As I understand it this four wheel drive provides maximum torque transfer to the axle- but can cause binding in high traction in tight turning situations.( It has only happened to me in tight turning situation.)

I have no control over this as there are no switches to change this ie. switch off 4 wheel drive. The only switch I have is the ECT

Power switch when using very low gear and this you do not use for every day driving. Anyway thanks for all your replies . Regards Blackbear.

I think you should have a switch up in the middle of the dash.

Hello Anchorman,

Sorry I have'nt replied sooner. I went down with the Norovirus.

With regard to your observation . This Rav 4 Mk1 has no control. It is Permanent 4/4. Have a look (Time permitting) at Auto Trader

Rav4 Mk1 reviews No 1 . One of about 30 "Awesome". I will just have to be more aware of my little concern for the wonderful wee

carrier come hell or high water. I wish I had, had it when I was driving army landrovers in the wet season on Maltas slippery roads in the late 50s. Talk about an ice rink!! How the world has changed !!!. Thanks for all the observations. Blackbear.

A 1999 RAV has a centre diff lock and a switch. Only the 4.2s from 2000 on has permanent 4WD.

Hello Anchorman,

The quest continues. I may have mislead you.I should have stated that I have an Auto. The Manual transmissions have Central Diff Lock and have a switch(Page105) as you say. As shown in my manual. However the Autos do not. They have as I said an ECT power switch(Page100) Anyway it has been an interesting search for the correct information and I am now suitably informed. Thanks for your information. Blackbear.
