Avensis D4D Intermittent Power Loss

Hi all, I posted a topic on here yesterday but I'm not sure if it went to the right section. Anyway my

Toyota Avensis 2L D4D starts in the morning and I drive for seven miles no problem, slow down change gear and accelerate, extreme loss of power and no smoke but slight smell of burning Diesel inside the car. Injectors checked, egr cleaned but all appear to be fine. Sometimes it goes great and at times no power .When the power does go it only travels at about 80 Kmh. Also if the power drop and I pull over, turn off ignition, restart the car then it drives perfect for another few minutes/miles untill I have to repeat the process... Any ideas?

I had them read coop, it said egr valve but had it taken off and cleaned, manifold cleaned but still have problem, could bad scv valves cause this problem. By the way I also had wires repaired that were going from egr to Ecu unit. ....... Head is wrecked with this problem.

When is the last time you changed your diesel filter? Had this problem quite recently myself and was informed that it was likely to be diesel "waxing" in the cold spells we have had.

Cut a long story short, had egr valve cleaned, new filter fitted and driving now as new.

Incidentally, dealer quoted £47 for Toyota filter and I subsequently located a Bosch equivalent for £18 on Euro Car Parts website. There was also a Mikoyo filter for £13 but as not familiar with that brand, went for the slightly more expensive product

topic tells you to change the PUMP if the resistances arent in spec for coil resistance and earth leakage on the scv valves.

obviously its just these valves you change and not the pump.

id be checking the coil resistance and wiring that you had renewed

as you can clean the mechanical parts of the valve all you want but the coil or wiring may be breaking down intermittently with use via voltage going through a bad connection causing heat (burning smell) and a poorer connection

this would give a better reading from the coil when cold as opposed to a hot reading

id also have a sniff round the relays if you can smell from inside your car

but you say burning diesel smell? is it a coked up sooty exhaust smell you get from a coked up manifold?

i have ( or should i say the wife) only had my avensis d4d for a week and still to find out all the quirks so i may be barking up the wrong tree. just going from my experience as a plant spark and mechanic

yes it does smell like sooth actually buy its only there for a few mins and then goes. Had it in with a mechanic and he said its definately related to the EGR as that is the code he is getting. He is taking it on Sathurday to check the readings on it and he said he has had a few of these in with the same prob, fingers crossed. ill keep you posted.

  • 5 weeks later...

I have a similar problem on avensis 2l d4d. Something i have noticed is that if i switch on cruise control ( but not activated) when the power loss happens the cruise control lighg goes off and wont come back on until engine is restarted. Has anyone found a solution to the power loss, fuel filter and egr cleaned and still happening.

Did they clean the manifold out when they cleaned the egr valve?

Pete.
