Avensis 1.6 Petrol Revving Out Of Control Nearly Crashed

So our recently acquired 59 plate Avensis Tourer 1.6 v-matic petrol was facing uphill yesterday when my wife started the engine. She says she didn't have her foot on the throttle but the engine revved it's head off and the electric parking brake released itself and the car rolled back down the hill. Engine screaming and making dire sounds. She braked and stopped the engine with the key. Several tries to turn key, nothing. Then it started but did the maximum revs thing again. A burning smell in the car. Killed the engine with the key. Sat for a while as very scared. Eventually restarted and now driving normally. Taking the car back to the dealer tomorrow. My first and last Toyota!

Can't really comment about the throttle except to say the most common cause of jamming the throttle open is non genuine or incorrectly fitted carpet / floor mats trapping the throttle pedal down, the bit that doesn't make sense is that the parking brake will not release unless you press the button or you lift the clutch to take off.

So your wife was driving? :g:

For no reason it just did something weird, but will not repeat the fault?

There was a girl at work that had a similar problem, wrote off 3 company cars, and caused a string of claims because of dodgy brakes. :lol2:
