Early 2.0 D4D Quirks?

ok bear with me ive not got the chance to drive the car much since i got it saturday

the wife has been mostly using it for pottering about.

its a 53 plate (as avatar pic) engine just turned 78k miles with good history including new clutch and t belt within the last 500 miles

im one for preventative maintenance but try not to worry about stuff that may never happen.and always willing to learn about the systems on the vehicles i drive

there may not be anything wrong with it but just noticed a few things when i jumped into it tonight from stone cold

revs at idle approx 1100 for a while and takes its time to settle to nearer the 850/900 rpm idle but it was cold tonight and reckon this is a cold running map and normal --correct?

quite a bit of "diesel crack" noise like the fuel timing is shifting quite a bit when cold, before turbo kicks in - ok when warm

is this just an early not so refined setup, as my other ride is a 12 plate dci engine which is smooth and quiet from startup.

also a wee bit of smoke when putting the foot down - this also clears quite quickly and may just need to tell the wife not to drive everywhere at a low rpm causing it to coke up lol

i am planning to remove and clean inlet and egr this weekend and to try my luck at blanking it altogether to see if mil is a problem. suppose i will see if i have any success or difference in running after this?

is 78k a good mileage to pour in some of the bg244 fuel system cleaneror similar ive heard folk talk about? - ive never really been a fan of bottles of miracle potion apart from k seal for a quick fix on plant equiptment when the pressure is on .

i am waiting on v5 to come through - anyone know the engine code for my car?

suppose ill find the engine number tomorrow when i get the covers off

thanks in advance

All sounds just like mine (I have 2004, 1CD-FTV engine).

During warm up, if you add extra electrical load (like heating fan), the revs pick up a bit to avoid it labouring.. if your stuck in traffic you can play with things to see the effect and also watch it drop back down when the temperature reaches normal.

Mine if also quite noisy when cold... again OK when it's warm.. if you accelerate slowly, you can tell when the turbo cuts in then a bit later, the injector sound changes... feels like the ECU driving the injectors really hard during warm-up.

I also see some black smoke after a long slog on the motorway, then accelerating away from a junction... I assume this is the EGR cleaning itself.
