T27 Tickover High When Really Cold

As the title says - T27 2.0 diesel. Idles a bit under 1000 normally but when it's a few degrees below outside it idles at around 1200. I'd understand if it only did it when the engine is cold but still idles high after a half hour drive and with engine and heater etc up to temp. I also tried switching off the electrics to no avail.

Anyone else found this?

If its any help, my 2.0 D T4 Avensis has done this from new. Purchased in June 2010 and noticed this in first winter. Symptoms have never changed and it idles at about 1200-1300 revs in cold conditions. In normal driving conditions it idles at just under 1000 revs.

I just put it down to the Avensis set up and have never bothered to mention it to dealer.

Typically this occurs in the normal stop start driving in busy city commuter traffic and with heater set on "Hi".

if you have extra load on (heating, aircon, lights, demister etc.) it will increase the idle to provide more power from the alternator.

Also, for others Iirc the petrols also don't have as heavy duty an electrical system as the diesels so maybe more prone.

Thanks Speedywaydthom, at least there's someone else out there with the same thing happening. Hopefully nothing to worry about.

Thanks also Heidfirst but the high revs happen even with all electrical load off and with engine at full operating temp.

Hi Alan,

my 2012 Avensis Tourer 2.0 Diesel does exactly as you describe. If the ambient temperature is below zero, the tickover goes up, regardless of what electrical devices are on.

There is some logic in it I suppose

I think it's normal. On my Avensis 2.0 D-4D idling is:

-800revs- warm engine, any outside temp

-1000 revs- cold engine, cold outside temp.

-1200revs- cold engine, cold outside temp, air fan ON but car not moving. If car moving even slowly, revs drop to 1000, when stops - again 1200...When fan OFF -1000 revs by moving or stopped car.

How long will keep 1000/1200revs depends of how cold is "cold outside temp".

Turn your heater temp down once you are at running temp, the cabin temp in winter 22 c should ok, the revs will then drop to 900 rpm.

I find that the car starts in sub 0 c conditions a lot easier if you set heater temp to HI but if left at HI the high idle will remain regardless of engine temp.

just another one of my brainfarts

could this be something similar to the ford focus smart charge system ( on a lot of fords models as well)

theory that Battery takes a better higher deeper charge when cold making the focus charge at near 17v or something

thinking off the top of my head here but think it is meant for silver calcium batteries.

could this be related on giving a wee bit extra revs to help the alternator ?

maybey its an old ford thing as i havent heard of much bother with it recently but folk used to replace thier oe Battery for a bogo standard lead acid Battery when it eventually failed not realising this would cause problems

or maybey a glitch in the post heating / cold running program if outside temp stays sub zero?????

any input welcome on this

This is another point worth noting for new drivers to the Avensis diesel, when it's cold, snowing or just icy and you set off down the road, the engine revs are set by the ecu at 1300rpm, you change to 2nd gear as normal and find the car is travelling much too fast for the conditions and it can be a bit scary the first time it happens .... :fear:

just a thought :) Pete.

i see my 2014 toyota avensis t27 revs up a bit not much but i notice the difference in  noise when i have the heat  going half way on the fan . plus suppose the ac in summer time the engine would rev up a bit. i noticed with my last car a vw 1.9tdi the sound never went up though
