Audio Unit

OK.......the head unit ( Radio ,Audio unit )...whatever its called.

Is mine a " Double Din size "....or " 1 1/2 " Din size please.

Only reason i'm asking is that i'm considering a Nokia Lumia phone upgrade shortly, and may need a new Audio unit ( aftermarket ) one.

The new unit must have blue teeth...lol.....oops sorry.....blue tooth !.

So i can play music wirelessly through it from the new Lumia phone,as i Hate having wires / cables dangling everwhere.

Considering spending the extra and getting a full touch screen multimedia player.

Hi Rambler, I changed my Toyota cd unit for a single din "rear USB mp3" stereo when it stopped playing CDs. I had to buy a Double Din to single adaptor.

After all that the answer you wanted is Double Din. :)

Hope that helps, Lee

It is a "WIDE-2DIN" in your RAV4.2

This means that the unit itself is a 2-DIN for rear fitting, but the front is wider and when fitting an non-Toyota unit, you wil need some fillets at each side to avoid there being a gap each side. These are available from various eBay sellers and are not expensive.

Cheers folks.....

Starting my search now.......Hoovie,i assume you mean those aftermarket " surrounds " you can buy.....can't really describe it on here.....think i know what you mean though.

The later RAV4.3 has an overall surround that a replacement radio would go into.

The 4.2 just needs these filler panels to cover the gap between a 2-DIN unit and a WIDE 2-DIN unit.

What I am referring to is shown in this pic .... The bits on each side of the full screen unit that don't seem to really be part of it!

That head unit was TOTALLY excellent and would recommend 100%

Ok hoovie, but i need to seriously save my pennies for that, looks awesome, that screen is amazing...but i'd be worried about some ***** breaking into my Rav and taking it,or smashing the screen for that matter.

I wonder if Toyota do anything.....similar.,so looks a ' stock ' fitting

That would help hide a fancy unit

Another option to not make it s obvious you have a really nice full screen head unit is to go for a single-Din fitting where the screen comes out and flips flat - obviously we are talking a lot more money then a perfectly useable replacement system with bluetooth feature!

Now.....THAT looks the proper job, years ago they made a ' blank ' fascia panel so conceal stereos, but it made it too obvious what you were trying to hide !.

One thing to consider with the single din units with flip screen is that you WILL want a camera (because you can) if you have a screen and would you really want to keep "flipping" in and out a screen. I know people prefer reversey beep beeps but having a camera is something I'd definitely connect.

Just my thoughts.

I was told by one installer that double din are rarely stolen as they rarely fit in opportune thieves cars, ie fiestas corsas puntos etc. Single din flips are more desirable for them.

Thats handy to know dippy.

But...having realised that double dins on the 4.2 rav are well built in to the dash, its not just a quick unclip and remove job....having to actually remove trims from the dash to get to the fixings is a far more secure install.

Another reason why toyota build better vehicles ....imho.

And all this because ....if i change my mob phone to a different and newer one,it wont have ' play music via radio ' , via an in built fm transmitter ,no longer available on up to date smart phones :dontgetit:

So...if i update my phone and want to listen to songs on it through the cars Speakers,i need a stereo with bluetooth...and ' pair ' them up.

A single din stereo looks horrible in the same place,so a double din its got to be.

I have to admit.....i'm not the best with all this modern techy stuff :bored:
