Rav 4.2 Transfer Box/rear Diff Lubricants

I am sure you guys will have been down this road many times, so, can you please help?

I am a recent purchaser of a late 2001 RAV4.2 Auto which is grand! No, I am NOT asking about the auto box, nor the ECU, they are covered very well on this forum, thank you very much!

My question, to which you learned people will know the answer is as follows:

The handbook states that the Transfer box has a limited slip centre diff. and on some models the rear diff. is also limited slip.

Both the handbook and the dear old Haynes Manual recommend the oil for both boxes to be a Hypoid Gear Oil API GL-5.

No mention of proper LSD oil for either or any combination of these front or rear diffs ?

So being a bit long in the tooth with ownership of various vehicles, including competition vehicles over time, where anything with an LSD MUST !!! have LSD oil, what do you advise from your experience of these vehicles.

I look forward to your responses in due course, indeed, with baited breath !

Thank you in anticipation.

Oh no not this old cookie! It is a very goor question and not one that is easy to answer as there seems to be several versions. If you trawl through the proper Toyota workshop manuals you will find that these different versions are indeen listed but again no common pattern as to how they were implimented. All I can say is that if you look in the pinned section you will find the service data that toyota workshops use themselves. Look up your model and follow the advice. If you want confirmation, phone your nearest dealer.

Thank you for that Anchorman.

As a new subscriber to this forum, I already recognise you as being one of the top "experts" on here regarding all thing Toyota. I note your suggestion to 'read the proper Toyota Manual,' then look for the Toyota Workshops Service Data in the "pinned" section of this fourm.

Forgive my ignorance of this forum, but please, how do I navigate to the "Pinned Section."?

Thanks again for all so far.

The pinned section are the forum topics pinned at the top of the Rav forum by a mod with a green flag with the word pinned in it (approx top 6 subjects, these subjects don't move in the list) the other topics shuffle around under them, the one you are looking for is the technical information/hints and tips.

Thank you Gus,

I was just about to post "don't bother now, I have found them!" but you beat me too it.

And I haven't been to SpecsSavers! It's amazing how you search for things, then they jump out and smack you in the face, bit like coil springs........

I will have a good read now and stop bothering all you kind people.
