2.0 Vvt-I Black Smoke When Driving

Guys

Started getting black smoke on startup and when driving for the first 4-5 mins of driving is this normal i thaught it was on diesels but nwever herd it on petrols also has a slight judder between 1500-2500 rpm for the same ammount of time

Any help appreceated

Black smoke usually relates to excessive fuel input. It sounds as though you may have an issue with your cold start system as the problem goes away once the engine has done a few miles and warmed up a bit.

Check the basics first: how is your air filter looking? Does it need to be changed.

Air filter looks fine checked this afternoon when i was having a root about it does stink of petol when starting from cold but am averaging 28mpg around town which i didnt think was too bad

Hmm, sounds like a pesky electronic problem. I remember when it was carbs and points, those I could fix. Electronics are just mad. Might be worth having an independent Toyota specialist or main dealer run a proper diagnostic for you. Worth telling them to only work for, say, up to an hour/up to a set amount of cash though, just in case they spend all day looking at it.
