Sr180 - Goes Like Stink!

Im aware Ive put some gripey posts on here recently about my new SR180. These are niggles....But last night the boy racer in me got the better of me....A rather sleek Audi A5 Coupe tried to undertake me on the way home. So I put my foot down....and he couldnt. I let him past me at a junction to see what it was. It went on to be a little test of what we had. He had the TDi Quattro - 2 twin exit exhausts, looked to be very fast, but he couldnt get away from me....In the end he pulled over and let me through ( think he was trying to clock what car I had!). I looked his car up on What Car when I got home. Only 177bhp - but 0-60 of 7.1 compared to my 7.8 and he had a slightly better top speed, but in the vital mid range there was nothing between us! I bet he was thinking "Toyota Auris?...What????" :)

It's not only the car but also the skills. It is possible to do miracles even with 1.6 engine if you know what you're doing. People do ofter underestimate the potential of such car...

Sounds fun! Once I could beat a MB CLK 320 (W208) at a traffic light. He looked kinda surprised... :)

not that anyone should condone racing on the public highway.

It's not big and it's not clever. If the worst happens and god forbid something goes wrong, just remember it may not be just your pride that gets hurt.

That's absolutely right. I hope people won't get encouraged to participate in illegal street racing. Actually there are places where there's good chance to accelerate within speed limits, at least where I live. After the traffic lights starts the motorway with speed limit of 80 km/h or even 100 km/h, so plenty of time to accelerate...

What I find useful in the SR is sheer mid-range pull or overtaking ability. I couldn't care less what top speed my car has because I've never used it on a public highway, but being able to overtake quickly & safely has massive benefits in daily usage.

The T180 used to give me a lot of smiles, especially when BMW drivers cant do their usual tailgate - undertake manoeuvres.

The most impressive speed that i felt with the T180 is at launch at max torque, it never used to wheel spin and would go like a greyhound out of the blocks.

No wheel spin? I manage to spin my wheels even on 1.6 :naughty:

I believe the T180/SR180 has an electronic stability programme which when it detects loss of traction either applies the brakes or reduces engine revs so that traction is regained.

i just like the surge of acceleration you get in any gear... i can often drive around town even in 4th at lazy revs and it will still carry me forward if a i squeeze the throttle a little bit!

So you guys don't wheelspin even at traffic lights when it's winter and the roads are icy? That is rather nice, I need to always start using 2nd gear in order to reduce the spinning at winter...

All I can say is buy some decent tyres. Lol. I think the sr180 feels slow actually. But when u look at the speedo its going at a fair rate of knots. It's no hot hatch tho, by a long distance. Is it a hot diesel? I'm not sure lol. However it's a very nice car to drive and very effortless. The problem I have is that I came from my stage 1 focus st mk2. Every car I drive now gets compared to that which I suppose isn't fair, but when a car manufacture gets a car right they deserve praise lol. I reckon that it was a cracking car and very quick. Very expensive to run mind u and that's why iv came back to a derv.

Well I always invest in good tyres because that's what keeps the car on the road... But if the road is covered in snow and ice, everyone is wheelspinning even on slow accelerations. This is the north mate!!!

We had a Mazda Premacy which came with traction control (where if the tyres lost grip the traction control reduced the engine revs until grip was regained). That was good in snow, and this was before winter tyres became popular in the UK - had the Premacy 2003 to 2007.

Well compared to my wifes company car 61 plate 2.0Gt 140Bhp diesel, the SR goes like a train! THe VW is a bit more whizzy and power band is over a slightly wider range too 1600-4200, but the SR180 from 1800-4000 is awesomely fast!

The T180 handled very well and no, I have never had wheel spin at launch except in the wet and of course, snow.

My complaint with it is body roll, but despite that it cornered well enough.

My wife has an A3 2.0 TDI (140) and that actually feels quicker than the T180, but it isn't... if that makes sense. The power band is wider on the Audi and also the initial pick up is better, but the T180 was just pure brute.

The car that I miss is the Corolla T Sport... That 2ZZGE engine is something to behold, the 'lift' is just awesome.

The SR180's torque is actually held back in 1st & 2nd gear deliberately - but also in order to protect the drivetrain from such massive forces. The Dual Mass Flywheel, gearbox & clutch would take a hammering if all 295 lb'ft was available. Of course you can switch the VSC system off which partly negates this protection, but I wouldn't advise it as insurance companies would take a very negative view if something happened (while it was off).

Hmm the dual mass fly wheel I think might be on its last legs on mine....Ist into 2nd is notchy and I can crunch the gears unless I stand on the clutch...but after a mile or so it sorts itself out..

I had a little race with a 60 plate Golf GTD today. He got really annoyed lol ;)

Frosty. Thats a rather lame warning. At 42 years old I do not need to be warned like some naughty school kid. I did not mention anything in my post about breaking speed limits. I merely stated that the GTD couldnt catch me....making the point that the Sr180 is as quick as the GTD. If people interpret that as encouragement to break the speed limit to find out, that is their interpretation. My post was not offensive or selling anything. If we cant talk about performance, then I will leave this forum quite happily.

The warning is justified in my opinion. Take the advice on board and move on.

Your previous and your first post both relate to racing on the public highway, which IMO is stupid and reckless.

I'm sure it is a safe assumption that whilst you were concentrating on racing with these other cars, your full attention wasn't given to the surrounding road and other users.

If you want to race, go to a track. Simple.

Read the topic it is about speed limits and treating public roads as a racetrack - which is what you are doing.

I'm sure members expect fellow members to behave both maturely and responsibly.

Initially the topic was intended as a reminder which it appears you are unable to accept, so I am quite happy to progress to a warning if you wish.
