New Turbo ?

Ok.....

Different thread,...on way home from work tonight my Rav was pumping out blue smoke quite badly, enough to make me cough when it comes in through window when queueing.

I also noticed the turbo was ' lagging ' when i put my foot down...it didnt pull straight away.

I can also now hear a very loud but short howling noise, when i rev it ,and then ease off.

And sometimes it just didnt seem to have the power it used to.

Then when i got home,i pulled the bonnett up,revs it slightly and could hear a slight jingle noise as i eased off.

My thoughts are the ' fins ' in the turbo...loose ?

And is blue smoke a sign of the turbo on its way out ?

Will check dip stick for oil in morning again, but it was still ' full ' on Monday.

Appreaciate all your help folks....as this is very worrying :( :(

It does sound turbo like from the symptoms you describe. Make sure both the air and fuel filters are clean.

hi matey

- at first bleed fuel injection system to be sure no air is available giving no prompt acceleration + turbo work;

- if fuel system is in order then undo suction hose to turbo and inspect shaft playing up in bearings.

- it looks both bearings are worn down giving a big shaft play and an oil leaks thru shaft seal to suction manifold. by the way - inspect suction manifold to be 100 % on the right way.

Have opted for a new turbo and starter motor ,get rav working again, then think about either keeping it as a.....hopefully good vehicle for a while,or get rid in a few months.

After all i cant find another vehicle thats in as good a condition locally ( int & ext ) ,i have no dents ,seats & interior are all well looked after.

And i know its history, apart from these faults its a good vehicle, drives very nicely and i still like it.....which is why i've kept with it.

ONLY trouble is............its being fixed on Tuesday,.......my birthday ! ! ! !

And i feel somewhat relieved that i've made the decision.

Can I just ask, Jamie.....can the timing of this / these problems be in any way linked to your friendly neighbourhood rectum who overfilled your car with oil recently....? Just a thought.......

Hi Kev

You know......that is a very very good question, did think that myself,but.....i would like to think not,as the oil level on my dipstick has'nt moved since.

Am now getting really bad howling from the engine bay.

lots of blue smoke......but on start only, and a few clouds along the road

I dare'nt take Rav above 2000 revs now,so am poodling around and very very careful how i drive,as am worried about turbo ' fins ' entering the manifold....then into my cylinders ? ? ?....i'm told it COULD happen.

I've even being watching U tube vids on blown turbo's on various vehicles......similar symptems....lots of blue smoke and horrible noises.

Thanks for the concern Kev,i appreaciate it.

Thanks to ALL the members on here who have put up with all my woes for last month or so,know i may only post my vehicles ' isssues' on here

But.....i still think the Rav4 4.2 is a lovely looking vehicle, that suits my purposes very well.
