Recently noticed cloud of blue smoke from the exhaust not with any regularity.

1.the engine could be a bad 2ad

2.bad diesel at garage

Took Rav to Lindops and running the 600 mile oil consumption check.

New member and Rav owner (had Rav 4 weeks)

Mileage 39k 06 reg

Any ideas welcome.

Welcome to the club.

When does it do it?

It could be just cold diesel, the DPNR (particle filter) going through the regen' phase or indeed the engine using oil so try to give a better explanation please.

Tks Anchorman. The smoke appears usually when accelerating after standing at lights for a while or pulling up a steep hill in low gear or after going downhill.

Not happening when cold. Does not happen on a regular basis just now and again usually after running for say 30 mins or more. Only noticed it after putting some more diesel in. Toyota Queensferry said no sign of oil burning but do the mileage check for excess oil use which I am now doing, they also said maybe fuel filter.

Amount of smoke varies from small to 50 yard smoke screen then stops and Rav then behaves normally i.e.no smoke.Hope this helps.

check with MAF sensor and try to bleed fuel injection system first before fuel filter changing. it might be true when fuel filter is clogged --- in details -- the pump tries to suck diesel from filter but it can not be possible and once it has caught this portion pushes to the first injector via rail just to keep RPM of the engine. sometimes this diesel portion is more than demanded leadng to blue /black smoke.

Igmorus - ours exhibits these exact same symptoms too. I notice it most when accelerating onto a motorway but as you say it isn't always repeatable. I also notice that when I lift off the throttle I also see a puff of smoke in the rear view mirror but again it doesn't do it all of the time so am baffled too.

For info I recently had the diesel filter changed but it didn't have any affect. It isn't using any oil or water either so maybe it is a case of over-fuelling?? It also idles high on many occasion but never when the dealer test drives it :(

We have the lindop box fitted to try and get our mpg into the 30 mark - could this be a factor? Do you have the lindop box fitted?

I am seriously contemplating adding a bit of 2 stroke - ok it wont improve the smoking element but its gotta make it sound less agricultural!

the final outcome, let's say blue smoky exhaust has many reasons and each one must be considered as step by step

Took Rav out on a 130 mile run round N.Wales today up hills down hills fast roads slow roads and only shot out blue smoke twice on the whole run. Topped the tank up full before starting out.

Comp was saying 29 mpg over the journey. So maybe regen?

This is the DNPR going through the regen cycle. It is an emmission processing device in the exhaust and sensors measure the pressure before and after the unit. If the difference is too great it concludes that there is a build up soot and will begin a purging cycle to clear it out. If it is becoming partially blocked it will do it more often. The situation is made worse if supermarket fuel is used as that tends to solidify the soot making it more difficult to purge. You might help by trying some BG244 or there may be some specific additive to help burn it out. On some cars, they clear them out by driving it really hard when it is really hot and therefor provoking a regen cycle for a long period (take care because a T180 at full bore goes like a rat up a pipe).

Stop using said fuel and go for branded stuff. High grade fuel better still. If the engine uses oil you might get a dealer to change it under the warranty program. You can have the DNPR cleaned professionally for about £300.
