Abs Warning Light Question

My better half told me that ABS Warning light on her 2008 Rav 4 has come on a couple of times and has gone away of it's own accord. What would be the possible causes of this for the Rav?

Possibly a wheel sensor breaking down?

yep, I had same couple of winters ago on my 2007 Rav4.

I used the trick of using a wire to cross ports on the OBD port and the dash gave me the code of what was up, turned out to be rear ABS sensor, bought and replaced for around £68.

The dirt, crud etc over the winters months found got in about the sensor, some dry days it was fine, other wet and frosty days it would set the warning off and maybe disappear after a while.

(A quick search should tell you what to do with the diagnostic port - very easy)

Chances are, it will start setting off other warnings and turn off 4x4 and VSC - don't panic (I did at first!).

Dont bother for a bit. They often cure themselves.

I'm not sure how the abs senors work on the rav, but my old Cherokee had a toothed ring with a proximity sensor reading each tooth as it rotated. After a session of muddy green laning, the 'teeth' had become clogged with mud, causing the abs sensor to read constantly and thus trigger the warning light.

If the rav has a similar setup, it might just need a clean out with a brush.. Certainly worth a look before taking it to Mr T.
