You can but there's little point. It's not the most torquey engine and the world and the 6th gear ratio is just too tall sometimes. 70mph and full throttle in sixth and it just doesn't give any useful acceleration.

Well, you can always downshift. But on 5th the noise is very lound because of the high engine revs while doing 120km/h or more...

Exactly speed_chaser the noise is very loud. Has anyone done the replacement?

Hi there

Change for the 6th gear gearbox won't reduce the noise in the cabin, why?

even if the rpm droped to 3000 on high speed you will hear the noise, Auris for itself is very bad factory muted!

Nothing You can do, only headphones or really high radio volume .

Thats a surprise to me!

MY 1.6 SR in 6th gear, 3000 rpm, at 70 mph is almost silent even with Dunlop tyres, so much so that on those occasions

when you have to speed up to go with the flow i have been surprised at how quiet it is with no great sensation of speed noise.

Also the acceleration at speed is good with plenty of response and willingness, i think it is a great car.

I wouldn't doubt at 70mph the car is acceptably quiet but the acceleration really isnt great in 6th at all. At any speed! Dropping down a gear on motorways isn't something people tend to do.

At the end of the day it's a tall and heavy car with a small engine so it's not going to be a great motorway machine.

If you say the car is accceptably quiet at 70mph what is the problem, isn't that the maximum speed limit?

Again the acceleration is fine, willing and responsive, and the car is a fine motorway "machine".

Is your car a 1.6 SR?

BTW, have you tried releasing the handbrake? ;)

Ours is a T Spirit and just like the Autocar review says, it's no rocket.

I tested mine today on high speeds and the car did pretty good to me. Compared to new BMW 1-series with 2.0 engine it was great actually. When accelerating on high speeds like from 100+ km/h you need to use low enough gears! Even the guy who drove the bimmer did admit that my 1.6 engine did pretty well in comparsion.

This is little bit off-topic, but I noticed the ride to be very unstable on high speeds. When going over 140km/h the steering became very unresponsive and I didn't really feel the road or the car. I had the original wheels on with 205/55 winter tyres. But even when I tested with summer set-up (wide low profiles, 225/40) the result was just same. Is there any way to improve stability and road feel on high speeds? I believe that it is more or less car dependant. But I know that even the bigger and better cars may feel unstable and unresponsible just like the Auris. Does anyone know the reason for this to happen?

Compared to other normally aspirated 1.6 C-segment hatchbacks in Autocar's limited performance tables (Mazda 3 TS2 0-60 11.3 secs, 30-70 14.3; Peugeot 308 VVTi Sport 0-60 11 secs, 30-70 10.6) the Auris 1.6 is on a par - 0-60 9.9 secs, 30-70 13.4. This was the 122bhp 1.6, whereas the 1.6 Valvematic introduced in at the end of 2008 has 132bhp.
