Wierd Engine Vibration

Some months ago I noticed a vibration coming from the engine compartment on my 2006 T180..

It was giving a very slight vibration as it went up past approximately 2000 to 2500 RPM..

If acceleration was steady it would not be noticeable.

If accelerating even slightly hard it was there.. But very slight. MMmmmm

After much messing around I took the car to a main Toyota Dealer who diagnosed the problem as some springs the hold the front pipe of the exhaust to as I understand or should I say understood it to be the manifold ? Or maybe the DPNR ? Not sure to be honest but anyway the springs were replaced..

The result Err no change. As the car was not being used I just left it as it was ..

On Saturday I decided to give the engine bay a really deep clean.. So with the engine running I power washed the engine and bay ( I did this with just a slightly warm engine Not hot )

After the wash and with the motor ticking over to dry it off I noticed a very slight noise from the AirBox which sounded a bit like a very slight exhaust blow.. But from the airbox ??

So after a bit of thought I removed the lid and swapped the K&N filter and replaced it with a brand new Genuine Toyota one I had left over from a service kit ages ago the noise has gone.. The vibration has also gone...

I really haven't a clue why ??? !!! The K&N was very clean.....

How good a fit was the K&N filter in the air box Charlie? Maybe it was rattling around a bit?

Tight as a drum David.. The noise from it when ticking over I can only describe as a distant exhaust blow .. Not really that noticeable at all unless you had your head under the bonnet like I did with the engine running.. It was not like a rattling noise.

If the K&N had been rattling would it not have done it all the time ?

My main reason for posting this thread is in case anyone else has a K&N ??

Maybe just it's 'distinctive breathing' then Charlie. I do that when I sleep but wife swears it's snoring.........................

It has been said that the K&N is noisier than the OE filter.

Local Hero gave me a K&N filter because of the noise. I soon gave it away. The proper filter is full of baffles to reduce intake noise. Just run around the block with no filter to see how effective it is.

I installed a K&N in my T180 about 8 months ago, this is about the limit of my technical ability. So far I haven't noticed any wierd noise, but appreciate the 'Heads Up' from Charlie. Will let you know if anything does happen with my filter.

Good question.

He's still alive because he keeps me topped up with topical jokes.
