Warning Sign Switched On

Hi everyone! I just bought a Toyota Prius first generation, 1999 reg. The car starts and drives perfect. The only problem i got is the warning light wich comes on when I start the car. Is the one with a car and a exclamation sign in the midle. I checked the owner manual ant the problem seems to be the conected with the hybrid system. I rang the car dealer wich is a mechanic too, but he told me that is not a major problem and I can drive it without worries. Like i said, the car is perfect except this annoying warning sign. Shoud I drive it like this or should i start looking what can i do about this? As I know, Toyota garage is very expensive and I have to pay a lot of money if I choose them. Any advise will be more than appreciated. Sorry for my poor english. Best regards! Paul

There is a gen1 forum over on the Prius Chat website.

It would be a good idea to post there too.

This thread might be useful.

There are changes to the MOT coming up about warning lights that don't go out.

Thank you for answering! I did not found yet the answer to my problem but I'm still looking for it. Does enyone know a compatible fault codes reader (not too expensive) for my car? I was thinking to buy this one-http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/U581-Professional-SUPER-CAN-OBDII-OBD2-AUTO-CODE-READER-DIAGNOSTIC-TOOL-SCANNER-/200732656984?pt=UK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment&hash=item2ebc994558#shId- as I read on a discussion about Prius cars that someone used some similar code readers on a Toyota Prius 2001 and was able to read the codes. Thank you very much for your help! Paul

Your best bet is to ask the gen1 experts on the Prius Chat forum. There are some knowledgeable gen1 owners there.
