Tow Bar Diy

Hi all,

I'm thinking of attempting to fit a tow bar to my Yaris (06 onward model) purely to allow me to use a tow bar cycle carrier. I'm fairly mechanically minded and not worried about the electric (famous last words), so fairly comfortable about doing it. The only area I'm not too sure about is the exhaust. I've looked at both the Witter fitting instructions and the Thule/Brink fitting instructions.

The Witter instructions says to drop the exhaust, which I assume just means taking it off the rubber hangers and (gently) lowering it down, so not actually removing the rear of the exhaust from the rest of the exhaust. Is that correct? How difficult is it to remove the exhaust from the rubber hangers? On the other hand the Thule/Brink instructions says to unbolt and remove the rear section of the exhaust. If the rear of the exhaust is removed am I right in thinking it would need a new gasket when it's put back on? I'd prefer not to take the rear of the exhaust off, so can Thule/Brink tow bars be fitted by just dropping the exhaust as Witter ones do?

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Ade

I would remove rubbers as a bodge/quick way first. Spray bearing surfaces with WD40 - NOT an oil based lubricant and lever off with screwdriver. Take care: if split you may break them.

The joint is held together with two bolts which corrode and break on disassembly - WD40 again. Sealed with an exhaust cement not a gasket on pre 2006 models.

I know nothing about fitting Yaris towbars.. sorry.
