What Was Your First Computer?

Mine was a ZX81. My brother broke keyboard on it (somehow managed to make one of the keys stick down by scratching it with a fork, the result, the "computer" wouldn't do anything because it thought the key was pressed down). I had the 16k RAM pack as well, which I had to keep wedged in with a bit of folded up paper to make sure it stayed connected otherwise it would wobble about and fall off. I had "3D Monster maze" and some text adventure game which I played for ages.

Does anyone remember those huge keyboard/case things you used to get for the spectrum to give it a proper keyboard and make it look like a BBC? And who can forget Kempston Competition-Pro Joysticks! I never liked the quickshot as you couldn't do very well on "Daley Thompson's Decathlon" with it because it was too big to waggle.

The only game I had for my ZX81 was maths. :(

It didn't work anyway. I didn't get to play a single game on that machine, only mess about with programmes.

Bearcat, I thought the ZX81 came out in 1981, hence the name.

Yes, you are right, typing error on my part that I did not see.

Now that Bearcat has mentioned the ZX81, I don't feel so bad about owning up to that being my 1st too :)

I remember my (rich!) mate got a BBC B, it was the dawgs danglies at the time. I upgraded to the Amstrad, if that's possible, upgrading to Amstrad, I mean, who ever upgraded to anything made by amstrad :)

Mine was one of the first few BBC Model As made. Still have it in my collection (sad!)

Prior to that used Commodore PETs and Superbrains (Z80 based I think) at work.

Suspect there's 1000s of times the computing power of a BBC A in the Prius.....certainly better graphics

yeh - after the 600 edition they changed the operating system on the 1200 was it? ... anyway - was much like the MAC OS but none of the previous amiga software would run on it which of course didnt help its popularity. Think was majorly something to do with the megga increase in its colour capabilies.

not really...

anyone remember the Amiga CD32?

CD32_2.jpg

The first CD based 32bit CD drive games console, Amiga chucked every penny into it and couldnt be told different that it was gonna be a huge success. I think it was somat like £500 brand new and the games were about £50 a piece...

anyway it didnt catch on and amiga bombed out bid style.

leaving the likes of sega to bring out the Mega CD (already on top of the hugely successful mega drive)

and then one day Mr Sony though, hmmmmmmmmm lets try this games malarky ourselves.

yeh i rem the start of the cd days, the CD32 was pants and hte mega cd wasnt actually that bad just didnt take off 2 well, rubbish publicity campaign etc, but Sony already had a little backing cos originally it was sposed to be a nintendo/sony joint venture then sony whent solo, and the erst as they say is history!

those CD32 pads were horrible to hold!

just like the xbox, being as you never see sega these days.

guess what! its atually a sega xbox, Gates bought sega beacuse they already have all the links and tricks to build games consoles, then microsoft programmed it, also paid sega a handsome sum just to stop them adding the sega logo to it so they could just put Microsoft all over it alone!

:D

ive got a dreamcast in my bottom drawer! pads werent very nice tho, but pretty novel with the memory card that you could download a mini version of the game you are playing into and take it with you :D first console with Internet access aswell.

ive got a game called Chu Chu Rocket for the 'cast. Daft name and looks really childish on screen, but stuipidly addicitive. Had 4 players on it once and hammered it continual for about 3 hours!

sonic adventure 3d was also one of the best platformers ive ever played!

shenmu and shenmu 2 aswell were also brilliant, waiting for the third one to come out as it was a three part story and the DC shot it before the third came out, rumoured for Xbox tho

always threaten to chuck it up on eBay and get rid, but to pull it out and have a play makes you realise how advanced the dreamcast was for its day!
